About 75% of my HS 9-12 kids are still doing consistent work. That being said, I teach an elective and the identities of those that I haven’t heard much from aren’t too surprising. I’ve reached out a bit, but ultimately, especially with an elective, it’s their choice at this age.
Our school had Qu3 grades in the books before closure and Qu4 is remote learning. We are allowing students to take the better of 1) their Qu3 grade or 2) the average of Qu3 with Qu4 as the final semester grade, semester exams are cancelled.
We have been giving reduced assignments, but they must complete & submit assignments every week for each class. Grades that are given are all daily grades, so if they have more than 2 missing assignments they will fail or be very close to failing I send out a weekly email & post on their Google Classroom stream do they know my expectations for the week. We monitor incoming work closely & reach out to the student & their parents as soon as they begin to get behind to help keep them motivated. It keeps us busy & on top of things - also helps the students & parents stay on top of things. We do give them a little grace on due dates, but grade their work just like we were in school. It must be frustrating to give grades for nothing - there is no incentive for students or parents to get work submitted.
That is a good question! We've been told to allow students to make up until the end of the semester, but we haven't been told what to do if a student does NO WORK for entire grading period!
Our cannot drop but they are going to issue possible incomplete to students who aren’t working.
Same here
Yes. Our students cannot have any grade lower than what they had on March 13th (9 weeks). The work can ONLY bring their grade up. However, half of my students were failing before the break (Algebra 1) and the ones that are working are the ones that are already going to pass, i.e. had A's and B's at 9 weeks.

Same here in my district. And they told the kids that in March. The kids have done very little.
That’s happening in NC. They can choose to pass/fail based on grades as of March 13. Why would they care?
Yes, from March 13th. They get a pass at the end of the term if they were passing then. If not, they have the chance to pass by doing the online work. We cannot give them a penalty for not doing the work. We have to leave the grades blank. Only 1/2 of my class signed into google classroom and this being week two, only one so far has turned in this weeks assignments. On student did not accept the classroom invite. Don’t know what these kids will do in the fall if we are still doing online classes.
Yes California is same ... bad move I think. Telling kids grade stays the same is t making them do anything ... I think it should have been formatted differently . That work should be attempted and tried so your grade stayed same . Only doing nothing should in my opinion drop the grade. And I’m talking like nothing . You can’t email a teacher , ask for even less work or attend a meeting or something to keep grade same. For those doing absolutely zilch it should not remain unless there is a true valid reason why. Teachers are so flexible and willing to always understand so to me somethibg should show an attempt at something
Yes and it’s given the kids the go ahead to quit.
Absolutely. Why wouldn’t they. Less work for the students & the parents...and the kids still pass. There is no down side. I really like what we are doing because if they miss more than one assignment they know they are in trouble & that failure is a real possibility. I make myself available almost 24/7 for their questions, but many of my students high school & college are getting the work done. Even so, there are a few who still do not.
Yep. Hold harmless bill, or whatever, says we can't count the zeros for non-work against them. 🙄 At the end of term 3 (February), whatever their grade was, the semester grade can't be lower. Our district didn't release this info to families until around a week and a half ago. I'm not sure how many know this policy, bit kids really haven't been participating and I don't get them that much to do. I even create Screencast videos of how to do stuff and they are like, "What do I do?" Der Der derrrr 🙄
Same as mine. Cuz they won't watch the video. Instead they will respond to the post and say, idk how to do this. Which i respond, did you watch the video...never received a response after that.
I have about 98% of students turning in work. (That is because I spent hours and days calling everyone’s parents to say hi, touch base, let me know how I can help your kid.)
I am putting either a P for PASS OR F for FAIL.
I have 2-students having connectivity issues; I am sending them hard copies. (All of my remote lessons have been through google classroom. I include powerpoint, plus, my video, plus simple easy 1-2-3-4 instructions. )
Not as of yet but I’m sure it’ll be coming down the pike! We just learned our whole school will be E-Learning 🤷🏾♀️
Yes, we were told that on Monday.

We are only giving students a complete or incomplete on work for Q4. If they don’t do work to our satisfaction we can give incomplete for them to redo. We were told that the state basically told schools nobody should fail because of this, so we need a justifiable reason for someone not to get credit for the course. If they passed Q3 and do nothing they pass the course. If they failed Q3 but complete requirements for Q4 they pass. If they failed Q3 and did little to no work Q4 they can be given no credit for the course. Students were o oh told grading would be different for Q4 and be given completion grades, but weren’t told they’d pass if already passed Q3, so most students are still working.
It's like the author of "Everybody gets a ribbon" is running education these days. I've had top notch kids admit if it weren't for the AP exam in 12 days, they'd quit working.
I figure I will count my blessings and wait until 13 days to worry about that.
Our school didn’t decide it, the State Board of Education did.
Yes we were told that. First week went well, second week less and you can see a pattern. Of course, we are killing ourselves to provide the work but they will do nothing and no penalty!
The State Department of Education decided this for all Oklahoma schools. Tomorrow ends week 4 of distance learning for me, and thankfully I am still having 100% participation. I have one student with one missing assignment. All others have turned everything in. I know this is not the case for all my colleagues though.
Same here with the additional stipulation that SPED and ELL cannot receive a NC. So they all pass even if they did absolutely nothing.
We can’t even access grades. We’re allowed to give NO points for work done in distance learning. We are only documenting (district wide) if we made contact with the kid/family or not. No other grading is allowed
Same. Arrrrgh! And now admin is supposedly discussing that this may continue in to the fall...and with a staff reduction!
I had 90% of my 4th graders online last week! The district decided on no grades for elementary students’ standards, only comments for Trimester 3.
Yes, grades can go up, not down. I am at about 60% participation weekly.
