Advice for anyone next year if you fly from NYC/BOS, ATL or LAX and book directly on Virgin Atlantic and book Economy Delight (not premium economy) from those cities to Johannesburg. You can get a round trip during the year for approx. 700-800 dollars and it gives you something like 25-30k MQM and 5k MQD based on the fact Delta partners still calculate MQDs as a % of miles flown. Business Class to Mexico or Ecuador on AeroMexico, China flights to a number of major Chinese cities, and Airfrance Or KLM will fly from the east coast to Asia to rack up miles during sales if you honestly just travel a ton and spending a weekend to increase status is worth it
It’s the holidays so it should be easy. Either personally buy a business class ticket. Same day it’s not hard. Total time would be half a day. Or if for work find some really expensive flight near Christmas and give some BS reason why you booked a really expensive ticket. Client needed to meet a certain time late. Emergency to get home and hope nobody knows. Expensive is easy. I can easily find right around Christmas a NYC or CHI to LA or SF or some small airport in Coach same day.
Your problem is most people/forums are looking for the opposite. Their employer was paying $1000 flights between Chicago and KC and now they’re looking for 500 NYC to Asia for miles. If you’re willing to pay I guarantee you, go close to Xmas go google flights And their will be a short 2000k flight. Go business or first class if need too and are paying. If you want someone else to pay that different.
Thanks. Wasn’t sure booking an expensive flight would get me the mqds I need or whether it would end up in some other bucket. Flights are all at my expense as I don’t travel for work
You can also get much better deals on MQD when flying Delta Partners. Aeromexico, Air France, KL, and Korean Air. You can get MQDs cheaper as they are calculated as a percentage of miles. A good one is for example JFK-MEX in business class. Book it thru AM website but you could pay approx. 1000 for a flight but get 1800 MQDs but there are a lot of conditions to be careful of
If you are going to spend that kind of money on a flight, might as well maximize your MQDs. If book a business class ticket on an international flight, spend a weekend somewhere, and come home.
Thanks Don’t have that time to give right now.
Not much difference between silver and nothing tbh. Just let the silver miles rollover and start again next year unless you really want to spend the $1000.
The miles don't roll over unless you hit the min status
Do you have Marriott plat? If so it transfers over
Have Marriott rewards but not platinum yet
You’d spend less than $1000 if you paid for delta comfort upgrades out of pocket vs hoping for an upgrade with 10 flights. Although it all depends where you’re traveling and if it’s peak times or not.
I wouldn’t pay out of pocket to take a flight I didn’t really need to go on - just to get silver. Silver really doesn’t get you anything. You could try calling customer service and give them a story about how you haven’t been able to fly much but want to keep your status and ask if they can do anything. I’ve kept my status for quite a few years by getting close
