Ugh, I'm sorry. I wish I had an "agressive and stubborn" female CD instead of a misogynistic and mediocre male CD.
As a female ECD whoās had a long, tough fight, I can only say that the gender bias stays bad as you work your way up. Stay awake to the people in your way, and find every goddamn ally you can. I am labeled all sorts of awful shit, when I can bother a male boss enough to give me a review. My teamās work is still better than the rest of my agencyās by a mile.
THIS +1. Iām seen as āaggressiveā for trying to advance my career by trying to renegotiate my PATHETIC raise or asking what I should be doing to get a promotion. While a man would be seen as āambitious.ā Maybe the men are just intimidated that weāre really good at our jobs.
I have "attitude" for not being enthusiastic about shitty ideas from my boss.
THIS š Reality being that female leadership has to work 500 times harder to get things done, are more effective at mentoring and fostering their teams than their male counterparts, which produces stronger work across the board, and ends with an annual review saying āfine work, but couldnāt you be nicerā
Dealing with this now and I'm at the end of my rope. Where would I be if I was a man with my level of assertion and passion? Much higher. I know this and it makes me feel like shit.
Iāve been lucky that the male ECDs in my career have been my biggest supporters. More so than the women honestly. But Iām in a small market, maybe that makes a difference.
This is SO true. And so much that I see other women perpetuating it, too. When I get frustrated with a female CD, I always have to remind myself of all the times a male CD has also thrown a curve ball, and I just took it for granted. What a double standard. We have a long way to go, still.
@SVP, what's one thing you do when you feel yourself getting defensive in a review?
Yeah but itās better now, McDonaldās turned their logo upside down this one day and it looked like a W, which is also what āwomanā starts with, so....
My ECD doesn't get it. I'm part disheartened and part infuriated by the bias. Contemplating if it's worth "changing this non-collaborative perception among your peers," as he said, or if it's time to throw in the towel and move on to another place. I'm feeling both conviction but sortof also defeat at the moment. š
Just say - Iām trying to get ahead and the role models I see in leadership positions exhibit these traits. Iām only mirroring what I see

I've been told I'm "too aggressive" by a couple of men. It's a terrible feeling when they're defined as ambitious for the same behavior. I feel your pain
