Wow. That’s huge. 😬 Would I turn down a position because of one person - yes, if it was that bad. 🧐 I probably would’ve sat for the interview though, and had an honest 🤓 conversation with the Principal. Who knows, maybe they wanted you in order to make it easier to get rid of the other person. 😎 Imagine this: they tell that person they’re going to interview you, and that 🤬 person decides, “if (your name) comes on board, I will quit”.

likesmartfunny

No one can say what is best for you, or the impact of a bad relationship on your daily happiness. That said I would never turn down an offered interview. Worst case, you brush up on your interview skills, you get a chance to ask questions and gather information. However, I wouldn’t overthink it too much if you already made your decision. What’s done is done, but perhaps a lesson learned. I would at least reach out to that principal and have a conversation about why you declined and clear the air so there is no misunderstanding, especially since it’s the same district.

Great suggestion! Perhaps this could give way to future considerations and opportunities.

No because at the end of the day, it is about the children. You and the toxic teacher don’t have to be BFFs but one person being professional is all that is needed

likesmart

You should'nt have to explain yourself. You know what is best for you. You can't be your best if you choose the toxicity that you already know you can't subject yourself to.

likeuplifting

I mean. I understand there are toxic ppl everywhere. But, this person was on a WHOLE new level. I could list all the things this person said and did, but it woukd blow my cover.

likehelpfulfunny

Personally, I would have gone for the interview. Toxic teacher or not, how can you let that person to determine your choice?

likehelpful

The problem now is unless you talk to that principal, he is going to be wondering why you declined. This could end up really being a negative for you. How did that conversation and have you spoken to him since? As for the job, I think I would’ve interviewed and made the decision whether or not to accept if the job was offered. I don’t see myself turning down a job because of one person, but if it was that bad, maybe that’s the decision I would make. I would make darn sure someone administration knew the reason, even if it was vague. My only concern now is your relationship with admin and your reputation. You don’t want someone thinking you don’t like them or feel you’re too good for the job or some other inaccurate perception.

Wishful thinking. He's a coach. And he (the principal) would NEVER get rid of a coach.

likesmart

That’s how it goes!

likefunny

Yes. Toxic is never good. Perfectly good reason to say no.

like

Thanks for the replies. I told the principal that the commute was too long. It would have been a one way trip of 40 minutes. Round trip at least one hour a day. I didn't tell the principal ALL the details about my commute. I just told him that the commute wouldn't be sustainable. So, I didn't include his school opening a viable option.

smartlike

Also, I really can't walk into an interview and bad mouth a coach. That's never going to fly in a million years.

like

Oh no! Of course not! You should never bad mouth anyone in a professional group. But, you can ask questions and find out the information you need. Who’s in the department ? (Though you know). What the role of (your nemesis)? I was asked to say a few words about a retiree who was horrible to me though I was her direct supervisor. I declined in a way that allows someone else to do that....because it will be a cold day in hades...you get the idea. But as awful as she was, I will never share how much I can’t stand her with people at our site.

like

Yes! I have worked with several people over 30 years the would lead to turning down a job. It might be interesting to go in and talk with the principal, being completely honest, and let them know why you turned him down. If others have had problems with this person the principal might have found ways to deal with it.

YES! I’m hoping one is leaving after the year they had!

I would have declined the interview and stated “for personal reasons, I don’t think I would be a good fit at this time.” That lets them know there is a solid reason why you’re declining. If enough of these statements are made, admin may figure out they are losing good people because of a toxic person. If your district has tenure, there may not be much they can do about it, but they can adjust assignments and responsibilities so that the toxic Perone (once identified) my decide to go elsewhere.

like

Yes, I would turn down a job due to one person. Worked with a person like that and did not want anything to with the person. When your in the same grade level and you need to collaborate...it was not easy.

like

Yes

like

Yes if they would ruin your experience and make things horrible to work in. Or request not to be on the same team.

smart

Aye. Stay away from people who bring you down. Teaching is hard enough without adding "toxic people" into the mix.

smart

If I were going to be in direct contact on a daily with the person and I knew they were toxic and could compromise my interaction and behavior in the classroom/work, I would absolutely have declined BUT I would have told them why I was declining.

I’ve seen a lot of posts on twitter that have a ton of rts blaming the police for criminalizing homelessness and drug addiction instead of fixing the problem...so basically the police are now the scapegoats for elected officials and prosecutors? Police brutality is on police, but blaming the police for the penal code and how much it’s enforced seems like a bs way for politicians and attorneys/judges to ignore their role and blame police for following their orders. We gotta own up to our part.
