If there was an easy answer, everyone would be working there. No one on this app is ever going to say they’re paid enough and have good wlb, and if someone does, another person will comment on it and say the opposite.

I'm paid enough and have good WLB.

Didn't say my life purpose was fulfilled. How did you become a Deloitte Manager without realizing life is about tradeoffs?

like

Definitely not the same. There’re companies where you’re paid peanuts and have no WLB.

I was making 65k in Dallas working 12-17 hour days plus weekends for around 6-7months and later found a role which paid me 90k for doing 4 - 7 hours of work.

The directors I know at AlixPartners seem pretty happy. No pressure to sell since it's not up or out. So you can pretty much stay a director forever working 50hr/week @ 400-500k a year. You say WLB sucks...but how much of that is due to inexperience? And I don't mean that in a bad way. If you were an industry vet with 15 years of experience, consulting would be pretty easy.

10 YOE in Industry here, can confirm. There’s a stark difference in stress level between my former industry colleagues and those that have only been consultants. I’d also say, on the occasions we DO end up working more than 40 - 45, former Industry colleagues take that in stride much better than the rest. 70 hours one week is worth 35 - 45 for 6 straight weeks. Edit to clarify: former Industry colleagues are consultants that used to be in industry, not my former colleagues from when I was in industry.

BCG1 - We can easily eliminate the companies that pay peanuts and have no wlb. Employees will eventually move out and they won’t be able to retain talent. HCC 1 - not really. If the company is great then it’s going to be hard to get in. MBb and Big4 are themselves are some of the best. But amongst them I don’t see any major difference. It’s only a matter of jumping ship to get more money. But when you get more money it is a given that your wlb isn’t going to improve, if not decline.

like

OP, I’m guessing you haven’t seen the other side of MBB/Big4. There are plenty of firms that have good WLB and compensation. They’re specialized and often require technical skills but many do exist. After being around the block of the big firms, I’d never even consider going back.

like

It’s all a trade off to some extent. For example, better firms also require more effort even during the same hours. But because fresh grads value money much more than WLB, the talent tends to pool at high hours/high pay firms, aka MBB. This creates a virtuous cycle because talent attracts more talent. MBB is certainly not the same as B4.

I’d argue although paid less than the rest of Big 4 its not peanuts and I think we definitely make up for it with WLB. Maybe I’m the exception but incredibly rare I work more than 40/week fully utilized.

All I’m saying is TC and WLB are what you make of it. You could be happy or feel that you are underpaid and go somewhere else. But that somewhere else is not going to be a lot different from where you came( assuming you move within consulting) there might be slight differences but it all averages out. You can’t expect to go from M2 to SM and expect better WLB than your M2 role.

Not initially. But if you were a SM for 15 years, assuming you could be, I'd say you would have a pretty good WLB. The up or out nature basically expects you to grow whether you like it or not. Just when you think you get the hang of being a M2, you get promoted to SM with all new expectations. And the grind continues.

So this might be a better place to post this and ask this question: Uncle D has announced explicitly that most people won’t get a pay raise & bonus this year except for those promoted and high performers. Amid this crisis, are companies including other big 3, MBB, FAANG, boutique consulting firms still giving high raises and issue stocks? Can you share the impact from your firm?
