The pictures aren’t as off as you might think. It’s not perfect by any means, but only 5,5% of the US population is of Asian decent, 12,5% African-American and 17% Hispanic. If you count the people in the pictures and do your math it’s actually not that far off, maybe missing a couple of each ethnicity and it would match the US demographics - which is the goal right?

You will likely see all new hires and promotions of importance lean towards the female gender. In terms of ethnic diversity unfortunately our industry thinks that hiring Asians checks the “diversity” box. Hispanics and blacks are unfortunately regulated to ethnic focused and targeted agencies. How do you ensure your promotional shots meet all the criteria for “diverse enough”? A quick check of US population demographics by race suggests that less than 1 in 10 people in these shots should be AA, and less than 1 in 5 should be Hispanic/Latino. So if we divide those 2 statistics in half for men/women, then 1 in 20 should be an AA woman, if we’re to remain true to proportional representation based on population demographics by race. Is this how it works? And before someone starts shitting the bed about “representation”, yes of course I understand the need and importance of that. But how do you implement it correctly if the population can’t match your ideal photo shoot?

Advertising is probably one of the top 5 lack of diversity industries. You just don’t want to be in this industry if you are diverse.

Is not about asking advertising to be more diverse, maybe it shouldn’t be, based on how it works. Just let’s not promote diversity as something happening when it’s not.

I recently got married and started talking to my sister in law more often. She addresses me as “Bro” EVERY SINGLE TIME. She knows I identify as female. I absolutely hate because it’s a sign of deeply ingrained patriarchy and I also find it disrespectful. I never address anyone as bro, dude, man etc because I honestly find it very disrespectful.
