Do 9-5 jobs still exist? I plan to eventually leave the big 4 industry but I keep feeling discouraged about ever finding a job that has good work life balance.

Just finished my first week in industry at a fortune 100. Was asked by the HR manager and my direct manager on separate different days at 5:30pm if I was planning on burning the midnight oil. Hard to get our of the PA mindset but 9-5s still exist! There is hope!

Typically we have an 8-5 (one hour for lunch breaks). Most people come in close to 8:30 and leave at 4:45 though, which isn’t bad considering. Some days you’ll probably end up working until 6 or maybe even 7, but it depends on the department and who your manager is. But overall, most of the time, it’s an 8-5. After going through 4 busy seasons, working a few times during my company’s month end (and quarter end) until 6 or 7 is nothing. I’ll always take that over public accounting hours any day.

Even some small shops. My wife is in global relocation and no one gets in before 9 and by 515pm.....ghoust town. But then again many of those peoples make 30k a year.

Yes, in government people will look at you weird if you stay past 6pm, working for overtime pay without approval, but they will also mark you down significantly as having poor work ethics for not being in the office before 7am (80% are in office by 5:30am). 9am start is not a thing in government.

like

You have to take a pay cut. You are paid for not having a 9-5. If that is okay there are plenty of jobs out there.

like

Government jobs or jobs in big old companies (utilities, manufacturers, etc.). if you aren’t out by five people will be looking at you weird.

I will say it can be just as busy as tax season at times, but the work life balance is a real thing here. And that’s what matters most to me. I need to have family time and hobbies. Not just “eat sleep work”. That’s no way to live and most companies in industry know that. Do a lot of research and reach out to people you know in industry! That’ll help you find the right place 😊

Work in BPG (technology) and I’ve left at 8pm once. Most days at 5 on the dot
