Do a lot of consultants eventually found or work at startups? From what I’ve experienced and heard, they both seem like fast-paced environments full of intelligent people. But from people I’ve seen, most consultants exit to industry/mature companies. Is there a reason why more aren’t going towards startups that I’m missing?

Startups don’t pay well (in terms of non-equity comp) and they require you to actually do stuff instead of make PowerPoints. Upside is higher but very risky. Most people will just go to F500 or Finance since it’s a high, relatively stable paycheck.

Most people leave consulting for stability (is stable hours and steady work). Most startups lack that.

My gut says people in consulting are generally risk averse (you do have a few that have high risk tolerability, but not that many). People who tend to be risk averse I imagine won’t seek out startup work regardless of comp. Though I do think comp is another driver since a lot of startups will ask people to take a cash pay cut

When I was once in Silicon Valley tech scene the more respected start up leaders were engineers and designers. Ex Consultants may be prized as a COO or internal strategy type roles but not as start up top leaders in start up space from what I saw.

I’m joining a Series C startup in a Strategy & BizOps role next week. I do have a pretty high risk tolerance as I’m young and have some cash saved. All-in comp is not bad either

Just sheer numbers make a difference. There are more seats available at F500 companies than startups. Those F500 seats are also more accessible because of hiring patterns; F500 like former consultants more than startups.

Struggling with an offer I got for an industry position. The base undervalues me, raises are low, but total comp is higher than I would get this year with my raise if I stayed (although it couldn’t compete with my expected comp next year). I’ll have better WLB, which I really need for various reasons, but so scared to give up everything I know and that the hiring company was putting on a show during the interview process.

Is the MBB name really worth it over Big4, T2, Boutiques in terms of exit opps? Would love to hear from experienced hires who have insight into both types of exits (MBB vs other) to better comp and wlb (tech is ideal but any industry works). I know type of case work factors heavily into opportunities but how much does the MBB name really open? Is that name recognition worth leveling down to grind for another few years?

I don't have a very technical background (or cloud background at all tbh) but was given an offer as a Customer Engineer for google cloud. I'm not sure if this is due to diversity hiring (woman and a minority here), I've heard google cloud is trying to up diversity hiring a lot. I want to take the offer but not sure if I'm setting myself up for failure due to not having a strong tech background. Any advice?

I accepted an offer to join a national firm after graduating this summer. The pay is decent, and I am relatively happy so far (it’s only been a month since I joined). Today I received an email from a bigger, more prestigious firm I applied to months ago. They’re asking if I am still looking for an Associate role. I would like to interview with them to see what they have to offer. Would that be considered ‘disloyal’ towards my current firm that I just joined a month ago?

Thoughts on director level role in big hospital chains?

Have an offer on the table at a startup that’s $35K more than current big 4 salary for a Senior Manager role. Benefits package is very comparable (401k match, healthcare costs, fringe stipends for WFH). Startup has been around for 5+ years and has secured a solid, 9 figures of investor dollars. Is it worth the move and having to leave my extremely secure “network” and role at a Big 4?

As a heads up. If any of you are interviewing at Facebook and were planning to leverage their offer to negotiate at another company, they will recall their emails to you with any offer information as soon as they think it’s a no. I told them I was not interested 2 hours ago because it was an exploding offer (even though I haven’t finished negotiating my other offers), and the email is already gone. Thankfully I took a screenshot as soon as I got it.

I studied SCM in college but I’ve been working through tech implementations on the ptp side for about 4 years now - it’s been all indirect client work though and no supply chain. How tough is it to pivot to more process and supply chain based strategy projects - do I need to get my mba. At a smaller firm now and feel like I’d have to jump to an Accenture to actually have the ability to do that kind of work (logistics and trade optimization, planning, manufacturing)
