One of the best things I’ve done to keep in shape is just trying to find a way to get 10,000 steps a day, usually with a longer (45 min) morning walk, a quick walk at lunch (20 mins), and then 30 mins in the evening. Listening to podcasts makes it quite a useful disconnect from work. Combine that with getting 7+ hours sleep and it works wonders for looking & feeling better.
I have dabbled in doing virtual Barry’s body weight workouts, which can teach you some good new moves to do at home to spice up your routine.
You’re right that “routine” is the key word - carve out the time every day and do a type of workout you enjoy, and you’ll see and feel results sooner.
Enthusiast
Count calories! Best approach. Forces me to measure and watch intake
Peloton app, body weight section!
Exercise isn’t the problem, it’s food. Just monitor what you eat and try to stay active for motivation. Then again I’ve gained like 25 pounds so what do I know.
My equipment isn’t limited, so not sure what to say...🙃
On a serious note for me personally I find I need a trainer for any serious gym work.
I agree. Skyping with a trainer once a week keeps me active. While I have free weights she is also creative with those who have very little equipment, as I understand it.
Look up calisthenics — plenty you can do with your body weight, and you can make exercises progressively more difficult (e.g., from squats to single leg pistol squats)
Push-ups — add/remove difficulty by changing your body’s angle from incline (e.g., against a wall) to decline (e.g., use stairs)
Pull-ups (plenty of bars for $50 that won’t damage your doorframe)
Rows for upper back — I really like these short resistance bands. You just stand on them and then pull (https://www.roguefitness.com/rogue-shorty-monster-bands)
Squats for quads, something like Nordic hamstring curls for hamstrings
For cardio... any sort of HIIT workout. Or go on a hike
Now, the weight gain is mostly diet related. Try (m)any of these: higher protein, lower carb, avoid industrial seed oils, avoid sugar, intermittent fasting (skip breakfast, don’t snack late at night), and focus on whole minimally processed foods that won’t hijack your appetite
I’ve been using Freeletics for years. Started it mostly so I could do exercises in my hotel room with limited equipment while on biz trips. App is free with plenty of free exercises and the option to pay to unlock even more exercises and a training plan.
I like Variis. It’s free with an equinox membership
I also run and don’t have weights - don’t forget the power of body weight exercises! Push-ups, dips, planks, are all good for working certain muscles.
I will be buying myself some dumbbells but you can always use objects around your place in the meantime. Fitbod is a good app to plan workouts too
