Do any of you have peers or friends with old generational wealth? I am with a friend now and don’t even get this lifestyle. They own 3 hamptons houses, Miami, LA, Tahoe, vail, Paris, nyc penthouses. Good friends but I don’t get this lifestyle of spending money left and right and being dressed up for everything

Does it matter if you get it or not? Because you probably never will- your background is different. Don’t beat yourself up about it. We’re all in our own journey..

It doesn’t - we’re close where we have talked about it and doesn’t change my view on her at all nor does she think diff of me. It’s just crazy what this world is - truly your playground

I could be your friend too, sounds like there’s enough to go around

Yes - I have multiple friends whose parents are billionaires (I come from a comfortably upper middle class family). The parents of my wealthiest friend have 14 homes in places like Repulse Bay and Monte Carlo, and a retrofitted 747 with a screening room. Those friends are no happier than I am, or my less fortunate peers, at least by my own estimations.

Let them be happy. You do not need to understand as this is not your path. If they treat you right and you treat them right then kaboom you have the start of a potentially good friendship, any other thing is just noise.

like

I do. They are normal people to me ☺️ when we go out I offer to pay, as I would with any other friend, and they offer to pay....we have a stare off and whoever wins gets the check 🤣😂 true story here.

I have no opinions about how they spend their wealth at all and get genuinely excited when they get great returns on business. We were just discussing the purchase of multiple properties in the austin areas (ridiculous prices) each at least 6 acres. If they want my input I provide it and if it’s not request then I cheer for them 😉 as they do for me when I’m trying to achieve anything in life

I have a lot of friends like this (think personal invites to Buckingham Palace and another who throws block parties with the Bush’s). I am 0% a part of that world. I have come to accept that I cannot and will not ever understand, but as long as they are good people then I don’t think it matters. They, nor their families, have ever treated me differently because I come from a poor background. Ultimately, we ran in similar enough circles to become friends as semi adults, so I’m doing something right! Just accept it for what it is.

How do you even meet friends like this? And how did this wealth come to be? Genuinely curious.

like

For me, I went to a university that had a lot of these students and I happened to become friends with some. After that, they typically socialize with people similar to them so I met others through established friendships. I went to visit a friend once and they had members of a royal family visiting so I met a prince as soon as I got there. It was all by chance for me, but once you meet one, the door is wide open.

My boyfriend comes from a family with a lot of money - no Hamptons house, but plenty of others. It made me extremely uncomfortable at first. Getting to know the person, not the money, made me realize that it’s just a bank account balance.

Many folks like this I was close with in college but as we got older we grew apart. It was hard for us to stay friends as they usually didn’t pursue professional paths and I had to work all the time. Fun while it was happening though!

Yes, and I find it’s usually not easy to sustain relationships with people of vastly different means and priorities. Especially if you tend to compare yourself with them. You often think you can be like them someday if only you worked hard enough or made the right investment choices — only to realize at some point that ain’t never gonna happen.

You say spending money left and right but it seems she/he owns assets that (at least right now) are appreciating pretty rapidly. Making money on assets doesn’t seem like a bad thing, and the fact that you dont understand it also doesnt mean it’s wrong. Money is a tool. Continue to use it as a tool and you’ll be happier.
