I haven’t had this happen either but I would correct it immediately if it did happen. You are a client service professional and you must assert yourself as such. I’m not saying you need to be rude about it but you should drop it in the conversation like, “yeah I will contact his EA to get it on his calendar. Is there any other technical matter I can help you with?"
Ok Bev
Yes. Partner treats me as a highly compensated secretary. I do get mad about it every so often and put my foot down. And then realize that I *am* a very high compensated Secretary, lol. As long as I’m happy with the salary, I don’t always care what meaningless tasks he asks me to do. Sometimes he goes overboard and I’ll say no. And then he gets pissed and acts like a baby for a few hours but he doesn’t ever insist at that point He has finally started volunteering to carry some binders/bags - only took 20 years and even now I still have to remind him sometimes
Who still carries binders and bags?
Tbh never seen this happen in the three offices I work out of, where are you located?
The number of times I’ve gone to a client visit with a male associate and the client thinks the male is a supervisor...always amusing when they figure out who is who in the encounter.
This makes no sense in PA. Half (or more) of each hire class are young females. Most EAs are decidedly not young, either.
MA1 you could be right. Might be worth talking to the more senior person. If they are reasonable then they would like the feedback. I know that I would want to know if I was putting someone in a situation like that unknowingly.
This is a very strange post. I’ve never seen this since as was mentioned before half of new hires seem to be women. Is this a fake post? How do we know stuff posted here is even real
Ha ha, good one MA1. I don't think this is a fake post but I have seen a few other posts that really made we wonder if it was a bot.
🙄 at people who say they can’t believe this happens
This happens ALL the time. And sometimes they know you're not an EA, but still ask you to do things an EA ckearly should do....like order food. I see it all the time. And, no this is not women being sensitive. It's real.
No. All the EAs I’ve ever met are 50 years old, and generally no staff are ever that old. Impossible to confuse the two.
All 50 years old? Hardly.
Managers have assistants at EY?
Tax managers at KPMG have assistants...
Your experience doesn’t define mine. You could be 80 years old and never been/seen someone being sexist (doubtful). Still that doesn’t give you the authority to deem my experience as invalid. 🙂
I’ve honestly never had this happen. Usually we meet at clients site so why would they think a manager of Partner brought their EA?
It doesn’t happen to me with clients it happens to me within the firm.
This. Clients seem to respect the position and the years. Internally, not so much
Not EA necessarily, but I do have to remind folks both internally and externally that partners do come in more than persona.
“Do we need to wait for the partner to start the meeting?”
“Nope. I’m already here!”
“Oh... Um, I...”
“Great, now that we’ve broken the ice, let’s get started...”
I don’t see how this would even happen where I am
It does happen. Dress sharp and act confidently. It happened a lot before I established my own reputation. Doesn’t happen anymore but getting older. It’s total crap. I was treated like the admin of the first partner I worked for a lot. So no we are not “making this up”. People are just clueless (usually men over 40)
All the time. It feels defeating
Consider what image others are seeing, are you presenting yourself as a professional and well educated woman? If you aren't sure, look at the other successful women you work with and how they "own" the room.
I agree. Ridiculous comment from someone who hasn’t seen it or experienced it. Happens all the time
I’m not surprised this is a big issue then I’m also surprised. I’d more expect the opposite like a young EA (I’m sure one is out there) gets called a senior or something.
I’m surprised this goes on. All the EAs I’ve met are MUCH older than staff - and definitely don’t take any shit! They get quite a bit of respect at my office
Happens to me almost every time I call a client to discuss questions on their tax return information. The wife will answer the phone and say they’ll get their husband, then I hear them saying it’s the secretary from the accountant’s office when they call out to their husband. Super small town area I live in, it’s behind the times
