Do any women really struggle with PMS symptoms and balancing a busy work schedule? I get incredibly exhausted/tired, depressed, sad and unmotivated and it makes keeping up with weekly hours really difficult and sometimes impossible, not to mention I get stressed much more easily that udual. Any tips for coping?

I do. If it's a long term project I make up for it the week before I'm ovulating when I have tons of energy. If it's a short term project I power through with a heat pad and stress eating.

It's gotten better with working from home since I can wear sweatpants and a heat pad at least.

Yes, and it became so much worse after I had my first baby. I had to start taking medication. It absolutely changed my life and I recommend anyone having these issues speak with their doctor.

Agree with all of the above. Nothing wrong with calling in a sick day if it would help push off any client facing meetings that you think you won’t be on your A-game for (if possible). At least then you can get work some work done without social interruptions you might not feel up to entertaining. If I couldn’t miss a call, and was working with someone I was comfortable and otherwise had a strong reputation with, I might let them know that I’m under the weather so we could tag team in case I blank out.

I get severe migraines right before my period. Almost debilitating. I can almost time them now so I try to get as much done the week and days before. It’s not ideal but it’s much less stressful knowing I’ve done a ton of work in the days ahead so I don’t feel so bad when I need a breather or a shorter day.

That's me today. Horrible migraine, achey, tired... trying to make it through to 5pm and am going to crash. Normally, I would have used a suck day or cleared my calendar, but it year end and I need to power through to COB (5pm) tommorow. Good luck and feel better!

Yes, I definitely do. I end up working longer days when I’m PMSing to meet the same hours. I also tend to start my day earlier (so I can use pain meds/heating pad and maybe take a long shower) and also end later (partly because one of my PMS symptoms is insomnia), which just adds to the feeling of exhaustion/lack of focus and general malaise.

I hear you. I used to have very heavy periods, which, on a couple of occasions, made for some very uncomfortable situations in the office. And it led to iron-deficiency anemia, which is not good for productivity. Even though I do not have such severe problems anymore, I still find that there is usually a day or two before my period and a day or two during it when all I want to do is sleep and I have to fight to keep my eyes open.

First, I would say talk to your ob/gyn to make sure everything is okay. There could be a medication you could take or a lifestyle change you could make that would relieve some of the suffering. Sad to say, diet really makes a big difference for PMS symptoms and menstrual cramps. Like, if you were to go a couple weeks or so on a more or less vegetarian diet and cut out sugar, you would probably see a lot of improvement in how you feel. For some people caffeine can make symptoms worse. But in my experience, one of the worst culprits is alcohol. Cutting out alcohol or cutting down, even in just the last week or two of your cycle might help.

Otherwise, you just really have to give yourself some slack, and try to plan ahead. If you have something big coming up and it's going to fall in that PMS time, try to get as much work done on it in advance as you can.

Oh wow. It always affected not only my productivity but also my ability to be patient with clients. I would say that it has had the second biggest negative impact on my success as a lawyer throughout my career. I’m past that point in life and very relieved. I say take any and all medicines you need. Or try birth control that reduces the #of periods. If you feel comfortable with that. But be open minded.

Talk to your OBGYN. It may be endometriosis or other issues. After years of having endometriosis and cysts on my ovaries, I had a hysterectomy last December at age 40. I feel like a completely different person. I had no idea how terrible it was making me feel all of the time. Don’t suffer in silence.

Same! I use plant based pills to sleep better at night, drink Ayurvedic tea for menstrual cramps, wear a heat pad (thermoplast) and if needed, will take a painkiller. We’re all in this together. And I agree with the above, if you are really unwell, take a sick day.

I recommend an IUD. I no longer get periods. I get some slight "PMS" symptoms once per month, but even that is hardly noticeable.
