Would you take additional 6 weeks offs of paid time off right after finishing 21 weeks of maternity or time it later along with hubby? Thoughts going on in mind - have a nice vacation with hubby for 3-4 weeks when he is on paternity as we have never taken a long vacation in last 2-3 years. Also, thinking if I should provide care to the baby for additional 6 weeks while he is still little! Thoughts suggestions from experience mamas!!!

I asked 3 of my higher ups to write me letters of recommendation a month ago when I put in my resignation. I went on PTO for a couple weeks & followed up with my manager today. He told me “actually I was told we aren’t allowed to write them for you. Sorry.”

I asked why and he just shrugged and continued the conversation...

Has anyone heard of anything like this? Bosses “not being allowed” to write LORs for exiting employees? I’m leaving on my own terms & good standing.

The pay could be better but I’m 95% sure that I would not trade in the quality time I get to spend with my friends, family, and boyfriend to make more money. How do you feel about public holiday gatherings? I felt like such a crummy mother for not taking my kids out to see a parade or fireworks yesterday. But then with the tragedy in Illinois and (on a much smaller scale) the number of local fires because of fireworks (which are banned in my town, btw), I feel so much safer having my kids at home.

M&A laterals: how long did it take for firms to reach out to set up an initial interview, and after how long should I lose hope? 🙃 If you deal directly with a firm’s recruiter, do they just ghost you if the firm isn’t interested or would they tell you?

Second year M&A associate. Love my firm and its people, but the pandemic has made my boyfriend and I realize that we want to move to the west coast to be closer to family.

We plan to move in the next 6 months or so. The city we are moving to doesn’t have a lot of opportunities in my current practice area.

Never thought I’d leave with such little experience and open to trying new things, but nervous. Any advice for finding a job in a new city?

PSA - We are headed into a self-imposed economic slow down. Now is not the time to lateral but if you do, I would make sure you are at a recession-proof practice or firm. The top law firms will be okay (they always are) but if you are part of a larger group of associates with no work, you are likely to be axed. Latham did it in the 2008 and 2011 and it will happen again. If you are an associate or really anyone but a rainmaker, you are expendable.

In the current lateral market what is the usual time for hearing a decision after a final round of interviews? Are there any decently respected funds practices where associates bill ~2000 hours? I’m in a mediocre funds practice and bill ~2300 a year and am looking to go to a better practice, but it seems like they all bill a ton.

PSA to all Partners: it’s alright to be wrong from time to time. We associates are not going to think that you’re less bad-ass if that happens. What will make you look *terrible* is if you dismiss the associate’s work which *clearly* showed you were wrong, say “let’s move on” and insist on the original revisions. That just says to an associate “I’m always right even if I’m wrong” and that an associate is there to obey and not think.

What was a typical turnaround time to hear back re lateral callbacks that you’ve had? Is lateral recruiting generally harder?
