Everybody should apply mece, they probably jut don't call it like that.

When the only tool you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. MECE is no exception to that. It works where clear lines of separation are necessary. It causes issues when you apply it to integrative and/or interdependent issues

(mutually exclusive collectively exhaustive fyi, meaning have all categories that matter but not overlap)

MECE is the basis of consulting. That is you don't double and triple count the same thing and make ineffectual hypothesis.

like

Imagine a customer segment activity for mortgages. You wouldn't want millennials and first time home buyers as distinct groups, because they overlap. As well, you wouldn't want your list to just be people looking to buy their first home and people looking to sell and buy a new home, you're leaving out people who are looking for a second home. A MECE list would be age segments. A different MECE list would be first time homebuyers and repeat homebuyers (either for a second property or to sell and buy a new property), etc.

Yes, we learn it in Business Analyst school and Consultant school.

ACN Strat here, yes I use MECE when applicable and so do most people in ACN Strat.

There is no other way. Everything must be MECE

MECE sounds overrated and just buzzword hype for people to sound like they know what they are talking about.

like

A3 - forget buzzword, understand the concept....otherwise you are basically practicing "faith based consulting" - you believe in it and so it is.

What the f people - does big4 use MECE... foes big4 use brains and require speaking English. Does big4 believe in math?

Never heard of it

What's this

Obvious

Yes

Anywhere to find good MECE examples online? I'm vaguely familiar with the concept, but would love to see actual examples. Let me know if you got some good resources!

Use MECE all the time

Yes. You can't do any type of consulting without it. You have to map the problem space.

D3 first two comments by A1 and K1 is why I asked - maybe they're in audit or SI idk
