Do companies ever hire people with inactive clearances?

Inactive clearances would put you in a similar boat to people who don’t have clearances. You would need to go through a reinvestigation process, eQIP and all...

That doesn’t mean companies won’t hire you though because to get an interim secret, it usually takes 4-8 weeks and some companies are willing to put you through the process early so you’re ready by the start date...

like

@M1: After you roll off, there is a 2 year window in which the clearance is current (presuming you're within the 5/10 year timeframe of the previous investigation) and can easily be reactivated, but after the 2 years are up the clearance expires and you have to go through the full reinvestigation from scratch.

Example #1: You initially got a TS in March 2019 and leave that company in April 2020. The clearance is current upon your leaving and can easily be reactivated at any point through March 2022, at which point the clearance remains good through February 2024.

Example #2: You initially got a TS in May 2016 and left that company in April 2020. The clearance is current upon your leaving and can easily be reactivated at any point through April 2021. After April 2021, however, you'd have to go through a full reinvestigation either way, since your initial background check for the TS in 2016 would no longer be in scope.

I know the feds had allowed S and TS to extend past 5/10 years (to 6/11 years respectively?) at the height of the investigation backlog, but don't know off the top of my head if those are still the current time frames or if they reverted back to the usual 5/10 years.

Yes and yes as long as you can be reactivated w no issue. If you’re pending adjudication that’s another prob.

Are you referring to a current clearance or an expired clearance?

As long as you're within the initial investigation timeframe (I believe 10 years for S, 5 for TS), your clearance remains current for 2 years after you leave a role that required it and can be made active again quite easily. Companies and agencies do this all the time.

If it's expired, then you're no different than any Joe Schmo off the streets, though a company might be slightly more inclined to hire you than a random person because you've been cleared before and can presumably be cleared again.

I just lateraled about a month ago and have been really struggling since. I’ve been constantly making really stupid errors that have never been an issue before. I wasn’t worried about it at first, but now that things keep happening I can’t help but feel like I’m setting a horrible first impression and am getting really anxious. I’m regretting lateraling because I had a lot of goodwill at my old firm. Anyone been in this position?
