Trust me it saves tons of money due to reduced space. In large markets like NYC where rent is very high the cost savings are considerable. The productivity claim is total bs however and studies including ones posted here show that it has the opposite effect. I suspect more people avoid going to the office to avoid dealing with this crap.....that flies in the face of productivity gains.
Also I do think part of it is to seem to be on the cutting edge of business organization. Recruiting is so competitive that having older looking cubicles can really turn a lot of interns off versus white boards, collaboration spaces, open desks, which can make it seem like a lot more fun than accounting really is.
I used to love my cube walls.
It doesn’t save much money, cubicles just don’t attract people
It’s dumb I like my space.
I have worked for two big4 firms and hoteling sucks for sure. How come hoteling is productive if you need to spend 30 min every morning to find an open seat? I reserve a spot but the spot is always taken by someone and the person in my seat is not always willing to give up the seat. My job requires me to read 1000+ pages of hard copy everyday, and it is really a pain to move those hard copy back and forth everyday
Should i be talking at a cube in open space to CEOs of fortune 500 companies about their personal tax returns. The answer is a definite NO NO NO.

It is super annoying to interrupt a client call with a “I can’t talk at my desk I’ll call you back in 3 minutes” all day long.
It does actually increase productivity in other departments. Accounting is such a "stay in your own lane" profession that we tend to view it as a negative. But imagine marketing and the synergy they could create if they could make decisions fast.
Lol EY 4 really sees the world in black and white
As a knowledge worker that needs to THINK about difficult topics, the annoyances of open office space drives me crazy and is very disruptive. Especially due to all the loud talkers, where you can’t help but hear their entire call as they jubilantly shout into the phone. For sure they are saving tons on office space. Remember when managers had offices? Lol.
I, to the fucking, love cubicles.
My firm has been reducing space with each open concept office - cool features but miss the offices
I miss the open office. My productivity has lagged now that I browse websites half the day in an office. If everyone could see my screens I’m sure I’d be getting more work done and improving my utilization
Not sure why we all need to suffer because you are lazy
