@CD1 creatives that don’t take feedback well also tend to not be great. It’s a pretty reliable correlation in my experience.
I would agree we are rare. I have to say that when I exhibit empathy, compassion or anything crazy like that I am sometimes treated with less respect even from the teams I'm leading. So perhaps that's why most choose to be cold-hearted robots.
I think that most non CD creatives today are so sensitive and don’t like to hear their work needs work or revising or that it’s off. I’ve tried soft kid gloves, I’ve tried being honest, encouraging and friendly and in rare moments I’ve been very direct. I’ve had people complain at all of those approaches at different times throughout my career. It really depends on the temperament and timing of the interactions. Most successful creatives I’ve met take feedback in any shape or form and make the work better.
I think there are two types of people; creatives and directors.
Not true. You just haven't met the right one yet. The best ones run a somewhat democratic group (until it's time not to) without bullying or putting our own work (or our ego) before others. We are out there. Keep looking.

What is this "emotional intelligence" of which you speak?
Tbh I struggle with this. Not because I don’t have empathy, but because when you actually care about your direct reports lives, they will come to expect you to prioritize their happiness. Makes it super hard to give feedback that hurts their feelings, or to kill a project they’ve worked so hard on, because that now feels like a betrayal. If I pretended to just be another sociopath that didn’t give a shit, I would be free to praise or admonish without the expectation that I am their friend and parental figure. It’s difficult to create emotional boundaries in a business that is 100% subjectivity and creative ideation.
