Do doctors lie about their compensation? I have multiple friends in anesthesiology, dermatology, and cardiology residency saying that if they work 50 hours a week 400k is a lock for them immediately

and the 200K in debt coming out of school accumulating interest until you actually finish residency/fellowship to pay it off. But I think we're all here to make ourselves feel better about not doing medicine amiright?

like

This is all a wash. Pros and cons and ever-changing regulations. Only makes sense to be a dr if your calling is to practice medicine. There are many other ways to make more money in this world

On average, doctors lie about their salaries as much as the overall population: e.g. 79.23% of the time.

like

I think Anesthesiology pays much more than the other two. Also docs can work full time at one hospital then go 1099 at other hospitals and get some great overtime pay, wish we could do this.

like

Should have stuck to pre med 🤦🏼‍♂️

like

Anesthesiologists are for the weirdest Mo Fo's in the medical field,

like

Agreed with D2. I actually quit my job to do a post bacc program with the intention of going to med school. However, I went back to the corporate world because I lacked the strong passion and burning desire that you 100% need if you're going to go down that rigorous, life consuming path.

like

Often you also get paid more the less desirable place you are living. For instance, a doc at a hospital (not private practice) in coastal California probably makes less than the same position in Kansas because nobody wants to live in Kansas..."Sunshine tax"

like

Yes, CRNAs are a huge risk to anesthesiology but largely the doctors are always going to get the more complex cases because no one wants a nurse with less training and less understanding on physiology on a high risk patient (i.e. kids). Also CRNAs typically have higher mortality rates because they don't know how to react to emergencies as well as the anesthesiologist

like

On average, 1/2 of take home pay goes to malpractice insurance. Using OP's example, $200k for 50hrs/week is still great, but the shine does come off just a tad.

like

The ob/gyn who delivered our children gave up the ob because of the malpractice premiums.

like

A good number of these specialties are also way overdue to be automated. E.g. Radiology...

like

Nope. That seems about right.

Now, you have to take into account that they worked 80+ hour weeks starting the last two years of med school and were paying for the privilege of doing it, then they worked 80-100 hour weeks for years through internship and residency while making less than an A1 and (most of them) trying to service a quarter million in student debt. But yes, once they come out the other side of that, they can make 400k+ and work 50ish hours. That's why it's so competitive.

like

Dermatology probably has the best pay for the actual work you're doing. That career is a total racket

like

They're a much diff story. Better route if easy life and big salary are your goals. They do have a high suicide rate though. Apparently staring into people's mouths gets depressing

like

Not a lie. I do a fair amount of fair market valuations on physician compensation, as well as comp planning strategy. Anesthesiologists make bank.

like

BCG4 so that article is from 2015 and the ASA halted it and limited it to doing only routine procedures that aren't even expensive like colonoscopies. If anything, it's taking away CRNAs work. And as for mortality rates, that's comparing CRNAs doing less risky work. I mean at the end of the day I personally would want an MD intubating and sedating and keeping my alive during an operation than an RN

like

It's an RN that underwent 3 years of focused training and education, not some random RN, and they probably have intubated a shitload more patients than an ologist has if they have more than a few years of experience.

like

Yes, EY5! On our first date, my ex said I had nice veins and a good throat for intubating. Um, ok. Drank too much once and woke up to my ex injecting me with who the fuck knows what. Most of my ex's coworkers were raging alcoholics and one got busted for injecting himself with morphine on the job. Made a lot of money, but not enough to offset the crazy 😳

like

He was injecting you in your sleep?! Hope that was the last time you saw him

Im in a junior position, have excellent feedback, work hard. I make very little $. I had 2 job offers and told my current company I couldn’t afford to stay there. They immediately matched. 4 months later I followed up and the timing of the adjustment will now align with the timing cost of living increases for inflation which apparently I’m ineligible for. Should this exempt me from a cost of living increase due the adjusted salary 5 months after we agreed to this?
