Do firms care about (pre-law school) criminal records? Have about a dozen (misdemeanor) convictions from 10+ years ago. Accepted a lateral offer and had to fill out a background check that made me list everything in detail, and now I'm nervous about it. My prior two firms had me sign some form just saying they could check, but I have no idea if they ever actually did.

All convictions were fully disclosed to the bar who approved me on C&F (after a long awkward meeting discussing everything)

Not helpful to you, but I misread as “preschool criminal records” and was like wowwwww

I started my life of crime young 🤣

This doesn’t help your immediate question but have you thought about getting these sealed or expunged? I’d recommend looking into it so you don’t have these issues in the future!

The background form made me list every one. So they will know (one of the downsides of the set aside, it doesn't entitle you to state you weren't convicted, if asked). I'm just curious how much much firms really give weight to that, given that the bar has already reviewed everything and approved my C&F. I'm hoping they're mostly looking to see if you have anything new, but otherwise will just trust the judgment of the state bar for anything that was already disclosed when you were licensed.

like

Haha I feel better about my c&f applcation now. One arrest but it’s expunged, plus about 6 civil suits.

like

If you already have an offer from them and this hasn't been an issue with the bar, I wouldn't worry about it. Odds are nobody is going to even look at it.

What’d you do?

It matters what the offense is for, how long ago it was, etc…I do hiring at my firm. Have we hired attorneys with DUIs less than 5 years old? Yes. Have we rescinded offers for attorneys accused of cheating in undergrad or law school? Yes. Like everything, it depends. But damn, a “dozen”? I would probably not judge the underlying conduct as much as how often you got caught.

To be clear, I got arrested for a now legal (in my state) flower medicine and was expelled from high school, so I get it, not judging, and I often say in great words of Three Six Mafia “Ruthless, that was my style as a juvenile”.

Have plenty of those too, but they don't show up. Reckless driving is a misdemeanor here

I have a record and a history of serious drug addiction. Neither firm I’ve been at has cared. When I lateraled I was told as long as the bar knew and it didn’t impact C&F, they didn’t care about anything pre-law school.

Does anyone else feel like they are just falling behind with the price increases for our big ticket items such as cars and homes? Like I started working in 2017 and I realized I couldn’t make it the way I wanted on $105k so now I’m at around $250k and I got some rentals but all of the homes in my area have doubled in price since 2020 so from $500k to $1m or above so I feel like I’m still just as financially tight now and cars seem just as unobtainable as when I first started.
