Do I need to have MBA to get into MBB?

I am currently working for a city and have been with my current position for about a year. Work-life balance and colleagues are great. I came from private practice prior to my current position. There’s a strong demand for laterals now; and I am thinking about going back to private practice because current salary is substantially lower (about 40% lower) than what I can get in private practice. Has anyone here thought about going back to private practice for the salary boost?

When a tech company looks to hiring for manager, sr. Manager, and director for the same team, is it best to apply to the highest level you think you’re qualified for? Let’s say you feel you are director level given YOE, but maybe given your work experience you only hit 75% of the profile…would they then consider you for sr. Manager or because you never applied to that role does the door close there?

What do you say when companies ask for your salary range? It’s a little schemey to me they basically force you into a corner when they’re the ones with knowledge of their available range. What is a normal pay cut to go in house? For reference, I am a 5th year corporate associate making approx 250k base salary. I was just offered 180k base salary. Is it unreasonable to expect to be around my current rate which is “market” for my city? I don’t care about bonus or equity but know that companies place more value on those - my lifestyle/current expenses (this is short term - working on a big Reno) a higher salary so I’m trying to decide if it’s feasible right now or if I should wait.
