Do i tell business schools that i was on a call center project? It was a leadership opportunity as i progressed to a team lead and lead some training initiatives, but it sounds derogatory to mention that i managed a call center while my counterparts reshaped a company’s supply chain system to increase efficiency or something you know? Would it hold me back?

The key is phrasing. “I did call center work” is very different from “I led a digital transformation of a government benefits system impacting millions of Americans during a global crisis. I helped develop vital company resources which enabled my firm to become a strategic leader in this space and win future engagements”.

OP, I agree with others make it sound sexy. But, I'm curious, what did you and the team actually do on this project?

Reaction Icon Like
Arrow Icon

Yes but I’m a team lead so I’m overseeing a group of agents and supporting them. Also leading training initiatives.

Why not? If you feel you have better experiences, privilege those, but no reason this work can't be meaningful, demonstrate leadership or impact, or tell your story. Just as us in industry overstate the differences between strategy and other practices, B-schools draw on all arms of consulting firms. For how to phrase it, hard to improve on D1.

Make it sound sexier as others have said. Or spell out how you had a bad situation (undesirable project, low team morale) and used leadership to turn it around

I'm considering a jump to a FAANG HR Business Partner position. Hoping to get advice from the fishes. My real passion is corporate strategy, but I've done a ton of work with HR over the years, and a good amount of client coaching and training. Would this hurt my chances of going back to corporate strategy later? Is it worth the risk to get into a FAANG?

Why is it assumed PMs are responsible for scheduling all meetings and taking notes? When did this happen? I was responsible for providing a recap of meetings in the sense of next steps, not in depth notes on the conversation. As for scheduling meetings, I was responsible for scheduling the milestone meetings (kick offs, internal reviews, post mortems, status meetings that I led), I did not schedule the team reviews (CD reviews with ADs/CWs), client meetings, etc. Comments?
