Not super clear as to what you’re asking but yes, lawyers do conduct investigations. At many large firms, it’s coupled with litigation practice or regulatory practice. Typically either internal investigations initiated by the company or investigations initiated by a regulatory body (SEC, DOJ, etc.). Often looking to see if there was misconduct or violation of a regulation. Interviewing people, reviewing documents, responding to agency requests — all very typically in the wheelhouse of a lawyer. I’m not sure who else you think would do something like this, particularly since internal investigations, agency investigations, and litigation are often closely tied for the same issue and client.
In tech, many lawyers investigate privacy incidents and usually have experience in data privacy or IP. A lot of HIPAA, data privacy(federal and state laws) and copyright/trademark issues in that space.
