Do most in-house positions cover bar fees and CLE costs? This is with respect to a Fortune 50 company if that helps.

Not in a fortune 50. But in house they cover it for me but more expect me to go to them as part of our job.

I think yes based on several F50 companies that my friends and I have worked at.

Not in a F50, but my company of 5000+ employees covers my bar and cle fees if necessary. They do put on their own cle for most in-house though

I work at a large publicly traded company outside of F500. Bar dues and CLEs are covered, as is membership in ACC (which, as a practical matter, mostly covers my CLE requirements).

Even smaller companies will consider it because they should be covering those costs as a cost of doing business.

I’m at a F100. They definitely covers bar fees. If there was a CLE that was on-point, I imagine I could request reimbursement/they’d pay it. They already offer so many free CLEs internally that I’ve never actually paid for any courses or training out of pocket.

Yes and yes. Private late stage tech.

Basically all in-house positions cover bar fees for the bar you need to practice for the company. They will pay them directly so they know you are actually a member of the bar. That became the practice about 25 years ago when it was discovered that many “lawyers” employed by companies (and firms) were not actually lawyers.

Absolutely. Employers are using and relying on your license...they can pay the bar fees. It’s a cost of doing business.

My company is way out of the F50 but anything I spend on bar stuff I can just expense and be reimbursed for.

Would this be a bad time to switch positions for the purposes of career progression and higher compensation? My current position seems stable but no room for growth and also a disorganized mess, not a very mature legal department. Things are slow and my legal department is humming along fine - we’ve addressed reasonable risk, have a good grip on where the business stands on most contracting issues, no real liabilities or litigation, and everyone is just mostly happy with legal from management to sales to product. As a result, I don’t need to bother the CEO much, which led the CEO to miss 1:1s, and then demote me to reporting to an SVP which massively impacts my credibility and cuts me off from leadership-level meetings

Anyone have experience moving from a specialized in-house role to a more general corporate one? And if so, how did you market yourself for the new position? I have heavy contract drafting experience, so I’m curious whether that can be leveraged for roles where I’ll be drafting totally new types of contracts. I have about 4YOE, FWIW.
