Our manager or above equivalents above review the time sheets and the bill is actually automated and just reviewed by a senior leader but it is not that complicated.
So no we do not have associates doing billing. Unless you were the designated project manager role (which I guess is possible but I’ve never seen it).
I experienced the same thing at PwC in ITS. Was part of why I left. Waaay less billing at Deloitte as most of it is handled by EFAs (Engagement Financial Advisors).
Billing is like maybe 3 hours once a month??? How is this taking up this much time.
What’s the utilization like for other associates in your group? Is everyone slow? Do you have a mentor, manager, or scheduler that you can talk to about this and let them know you’d like to be staffed on actual projects?
Billing is important to learn, sure, but ultimately you’re not learning any tax technical concepts that would allow you to get staffed on actual projects while you’re working on billing summaries so this is definitely not a situation you want to be in long term. It’s also a bad precedent for management to set, if an associate communicates their availability and managers just push down random bill maintenance tasks. Eventually your associates are going to stop telling you they have availability.
My only other thought here is that it could be stemming from management not feeling like they can trust your work on substantive projects. I am not saying that as a bad thing about you, but only pointing out that if if that’s the case, you should leave for a firm that is willing to help you learn.
