You're doing a good thing!! Don't take parenting advice from 12 year olds haha

We don’t let ours on social media. Oldest is 10. It’s toxic.
Don’t let children use social media. Ever.
I don’t have kids but I helicopter parented my brother from when he was ~10yo. No social media, set restrictions on his phone and computer to stop connecting to the internet after midnight and restricted gaming apps
My kids don’t even get phones until they are 12, then usage is monitored to help them develop healthy screen habits. No one has been allowed social media until high school. They don’t really seem to care.
I know plenty of parents that don’t allow their under 12 kids to use social media.
I've been in computer science 25 years which requires me to spend large amounts of time online. I know how toxic and dangerous it can be. I set hard boundaries for my youngest children. I do hear a lot of "[insert kid name]'s parents let them play this game or have a smartphone", etc. It's tough to say no but just think of it this way - what value or education are they receiving at that time? Is it just entertainment?
I would decouple the entertainment part from this, as entertainment is not bad in itself. But no one ever tried to elicit selfies or to bully a kid from like, a TV show or a Zelda game or something. It's the open anonymous access that's cause for concern. Kids don't need to concern themselves with productivity just yet, but we do need to concern ourselves with their mental well-being.
OMG, no way are you "the worst parent" !😂 The pandemic basically made us break (or relax) a ton of parenting promises we had made to ourselves, but I'm with you, sister!😊😊 Social media is toxic and basically a drug. We have a different situation because we have a 9 yo boy and social media isn't really all that appealing yet. But similarly, we've watched many of his friends turn into "Switch zombies" over the pandemic – parents were like, "This thing will be tough but over in 3 months, we got him a Switch to help us get through" and now they're just junkies. Everything is a negotiation for time on device, and no amount of time is ever enough.. and it always ends in tears. Same with YouTube and many types of "educational" activities on the computer. I told my kid that he could smoke cigarettes before we let him on YT... I was only half kidding. But you're doing the very very unpopular but (I believe) right thing for you (dealing with tween stress from social media is exceptionally stressful for parents – you're basically letting strangers into your daughter's life with zero screening, authentication, or oversight) and your family. I know other parents who have different (even the opposite) opinions, and some of them sound valid to me, but everyone's situation is different. The ability to monitor and participate with them in certain activities is key and we're pretty time poor right now, so the "very limited tech" rule is right for me and my family.
