Agreed. Kids nowadays are too into their snapgrams, instachats and fyre festivals
Why don’t firms make not only attractive to join but also to stay? This is not a one-way relationship
This!
I think you need to treat the job seriously and work as hard as you did in school. You're getting paid to produce not sit around with your credentials around your neck.
Classic response.
I dont get it. Consulting was my last choice and I barely made any effort to get into here.
I think it’s an combination or unmet expectation (from employers and employees) and changing work landscape.
I know people who came in and just felt that the cultural fit was not for them.
When I was recruiting for consulting I thought I was gonna be coming up with cool ideas and be innovative and entrepreneurial and to some extent that may be true but in reality I’m formatting decks and proofreading proposals. All while I’m missing out on precious family and friend milestones. Meanwhile, my friends who got jobs at cooler companies and have great work life balance make just as much money as me.
I don’t regret my decision of being in consulting and continue to follow this work but I don’t blame my friends who have left.
Agree, except my friends who got jobs at cooler companies are making 30-40k more than me. Why would any technical junior staff stay when they could exit for a company with a better name, that kind of raise, and better work life balance?
That said i completely agree that consulting is amazing for your soft skills and I don't regret my choice... I just don't see how it's beneficial to stay more than a few years
I only post because I definitely had this problem and was called out on it. C1: just be aware of your surroundings, be emotionally intelligent and read between the lines, and most importantly, don’t be lazy and take shortcuts.
Just wondering instead of blaming us, are there ways that firms can make their entry level programs better? Heard the bench is deep across the board from friends who started last year. Hard to stay motivated and not want to jump ship if there’s no work for you to do.
I’m a new hire out of UG, any tips on how to stay in?
OP what are you trying to ask with your question? I read this as UG and MBAs working hard to get into consulting and then jumping ship to betters things. That I think is completely valid and is definitely a major reason why people start in consulting in general
Yes, I spent 5 years in industry busting my a$$ to become an associate at 27. Now that I’m in everyone seems to move as slow as molasses.
What companies are paying more than consulting and have better WLB? You guys make it seem like it’s so common but I’ve yet to see it outside of finance or FAANG
It is so common at least for my friends in the west coast.
The profile that consulting firms look for is almost the same everywhere:
-academic record (3.5 minimum)
-Highly trainable
- Comes from a target school
Guess what the profile for incoming class of new grads looks like for tech companies?
Consulting thinks it can compete but only after finance and tech has taken their picks. No offense.
