I honestly have never even thought about the bags that my associates have, and to be honest probably wouldn’t be able to pick out designer bags unless they had the logo clearly on it. But I totally agree with MC - it is more about the client than the partner...I try to make sure the way I dress/what I carry is on par with the client.
Sorry, but I really don’t care what people think. I worked all through Uni and paid for everything myself (although in Europe so not crazy US costs) and paid for my designer bag/ fancy watch/jewelry myself with the salary that I make because I like it.
Once got a comment like “looks like we are paying our analysts too much if they can afford xx bag” and I just replied that I save for the things I want and you might prioritize differently but this is clearly not a reflection of the job I do or what my work is worth.
I don’t know about partners, but I do think it’s in poor taste depending on your client. For some clients, I try not to look too “fancy”.
Really good analogy!
I could care less what people think of me with my designer bag lol. I have had people say “we’re paying you too much” in jest however. Optics wise people know that associates don’t make a lot - but never seem to factor in familial wealth, savings, and whatever else. I say do you.
Omg, we all should answer that they are paying us actually 25% less than our male counterparts, so technically we are underpaid
Well as the majority of partners are men (womp womp), doubting they’ll notice or appreciate the cost of your handbag.
No lol my coworker comes into work dripping in Dior head to toe and she’s our Partners favorite
This also reminds me of my director though who made a team wide comment to the only SA who didn’t have a designer bag.. he went off n said all of us here have a tumi bag ir some known designer brand except for ABC.. I actually thought that wasn’t nice!!
Its not even about financial situation; its about personal preference and choice as well as alignment with value system (consumerism vs minimalism for example)
I have been collecting and selling hermes/ Chanels on the side since my early twenties. The profit that I make on an annual basis is more than my variable compensation. I enjoy taking my bags to work and when people ask merely tell them “I’m test carrying for my client (which is probably true as I will probably sell it at some point)”. Though I never carry my Birkins and Kellys to work and when being at client site I always carry my Mulberry tote which no one recognizes.
I’m so interested in this, how did you get into it?
A few years back I bought myself an expensive watch. For me this was a big milestone - achieving a certain level of success that I could treat myself to this. I wore it daily to work and definitely noticed more senior execs staring at it (not in a good way) which made me feel like maybe I shouldn’t wear it to work. but I continued because hey I love the watch and I justified the price to myself based on how many wears I’d get out of it, so I wasn’t about to turn it into a special occasion watch.

I have Zenith Heritage Lady Ultra Thin Moon Phase with Mother of Pearl Dial and diamonds.
They are beautiful, but I barely wear them, Apple Watch is so much more functional. And I saw women in Europe wearing both Apple Watch and Luxury watch on both hands, and I think it’s ridiculous... they are cheaper than AP, but ain’t cheap
We never said anything to her face, but the partner was flabbergasted at how the senior on the team brought her Hermès bag as a work bag. Ultimately up to you, if expressing your fashion sense outweighs your team’s/ client’s perception of you. Personal choice.
She ended up leaving, moving and marrying some old rich guy and became a stepmom. Her stepchildren hate her. Very specific story but true.
I don’t care!! On my first project I was local and driving.. i used to drive my bmw 3 series and often times drop my partner to his hotel! He was so cool about it.. and no I didn’t spend on the car, my husband and I did.. together!! Nobody knows anyone’s background so they are in the wrong to judge I think...
I enjoy and wear my designer items— clothes, bags, shoes, jewelry. I would not look down at a junior doing the same.
Define ”designer bag”?
Great tips! Thanks!!!
I’ve gotten shit from an SM for my tumi set I was gifted for college graduation 😅 but at the end of the day I don’t give a f
Don’t know why a partner should even notice. Agree with above to show more restraint with clients.
I think it’s a matter of the culture of your office and clients. It also matters if the brand is visible.
