That being said, McKinsey hasn’t been great for our industry when it comes to reputation.
Between that and how our Partners are becoming salesmen rather than true experts in their fields... the profession has changed a lot

You aren’t imagining it. Consulting is synonymous with layoffs for many client organizations and their people.
Someone who is 70 years old told me “I worked at a company for 30 years and then a bunch of MBAs (talking about consultants), who knew nothing about the people or the industry, came in. Then after 8 months of the MBAs work, half the company got let go... because of what they advised the leadership.” Likely, if older individuals don’t like consultants, they’ve had a negative experience with them in the past

Well, I’d say they remember it fondly because if they get it nowadays, they are just utterly disappointed by reality and find out it rarely functions as promised or needed.

I've noticed that a lot of engineers think of management consultants as hucksters.
Pro
At most companies, there are a handful of people adding value, rest are paper pushers. Early pandemic proved that. I’m not bitter, I’m under no delusion or don’t have an inflated sense of what I do.
I haven’t experienced that from personal connections. From industry people, yes.
I don’t disagree. There’s an arrogance to the nature of consulting.
I’ve run into that when people have no clue what consulting means. I feel like they often want a cookie cutter answer that they can understand and if you’ve never been a consultant (or worked with them) you’ve got no idea what they really do. I try to give a bit more detail about my job than just tech consulting these days and it usually works out for the best
