He then asked where the change was, and when I explained that I didn't give back the loose change, he made a big stink about how dollars and cents matter and didn't leave me a tip. I have a friend who lives inside my head. Every time I think of doing something important, be it a career move, who I date, where I live, I think: what will he think of that? I’m basing so much of what I do off how he will perceive it. I try to fight and ignore it but it’s agonizing and I don’t know how to let it go. We don’t even live in the same country anymore and don’t speak regularly, but we were close throughout high school and college.
