In April you can leave every pair of shoes you have at the front door because you could need snow boots, rain boots, flip flops or sneakers.
I'm just hear to say how impressed I am at the volume of responses you got for this post. Boston folks really care!
OP - In other parts of the country you show respect by engaging with others. I’m Boston, we show respect to others by giving them space. People might interpret that as cold and unfriendly, but it’s just a culture difference.
Windbreaker, heavy snow coat.
Umbrellas seem silly here (unless you're in suburbs).
Gusts in the city will destroy any umbrella you're holding
Lol, back bay indeed
All of the above is true; that said, adding an umbrella to your possessions isn’t the worst idea. Too, you need really good winter boots. The snow turns to slush at every street corner and can be well above ankle deep. And don’t own a coat without a hood - been here for 30 years and own 3 bathing suits and 14 hooded jackets/coats. 😂 Despite crabbing about the weather it’s a lovely town. Welcome!
Ha! This.
I have four different black puffy coats. One is super warm. One is super thin (but still warm) and easy to carry. One is slim/stretch/best looking. One is short.

Yes. Seattle rain (for the most part) is like a constant mist where you don’t actually get wet. Boston will have downpours where you’re getting soaked no matter what, but an umbrella definitely helps.

Boston is very seasonal so if you’re moving here you really just have to be prepared for all 4 seasons, and to experience at least 3 of them in a short time frame when “unseasonal” temps happen. Example: in the spring, it’s not unusual for temps to have a 30-40 degree swing in the span of a week. Low of 38 on a Sunday could mean high of 83 by Thursday, and then back to 60 on Saturday.
It’s tough because of how windy Boston often is, but it’s definitely necessary in the summertime when it’ll be humid and raining so you definitely don’t want to be wearing a jacket
I always used umbrellas. (I’m in the burbs now and still use them.) didn’t use them in Seattle when I lived there.
Make sure to get the ones that have air vents and don’t invert with strong winds- it can get windy downtown when it rains and you’ll see all the broken umbrellas in the trash at the same time. Get the good ones!
I only use a rain shell. Nothing like walking down narrow sidewalks trying to avoid getting an eye stabbed out by an umbrella-yielding pedestrian.
An umbrella can be a good blocker for the high sun during summertime. Just saying. :)
Neither. You just stay put at home.
I'm originally from Seattle and never used an umbrella or even rain boots there - after moving to Boston it's pretty necessary to have gear ready for all four seasons. There are more downpours, stronger winds, and a lot of areas (sidewalks and roads included) that quickly flood or get too deep to step in with everyday shoes. Thunderstorms in the summer are quite common too. Umbrellas are nice to have, but like folks mentioned can be tricky in crowded/narrow sections or the aforementioned strong winds. Black ice and thick/iced over snow is also significant here since it does get bitter cold esp with wind chill, so lots to be careful about. But I love the 4 seasons here, it is such a nice change:)
My advice is to bring what you have and adjust accordingly as winter approaches. The winters here aren’t that bad - it’s only a bit colder than Seattle.
A bubble umbrella is durable and provides more coverage than an average umbrella. I’m so surprised so many people say they don’t use one - some days it pours! Think about your bag getting soaked
Key is good/large hood with hood visibility visor. Ll bean my current fave. And lightweight so can wear over anything or solo.
Nope. Lots of this stuff has that type stuff
If you start looking you will see there is a good amount of rain/snow gear that is waterproof/warm like ski gear but is black/dark/city looking too
Get a nice, “city” umbrella—a coat goes without saying—not an obnoxious oversized golf umbrella.
