Good performance review = you get strong reputation (even if score is not communicated, reputation spreads) = people want to staff you on their projects = you get more options for project to pick = more fun projects = better consulting life

This ☝️, there are non monetary benefits outside bonus like mentioned above where you build a strong personal brand and get rewarded with better opportunities which set you up with better career growth with more earning potential in long run. Once you get that strong brand in your field/industry you really can open up a lot of doors for yourself which can be life changing and you can have more options to make things better for yourself .
Being average is like a waste of time in my opinion (no offense here), but you are still doing the job but there’s less visibility/less recognized, this is like the dangerous comfort zone where you feel like it’s less stress but it’s only temporary I would argue that it’s actually adding more stress long run in your career path to make progression.
And also high performer doesn’t necessarily mean you have to burn yourself out. Work smarter not harder.
No, average is just fine. Unless you’re passionate about consulting. In which case, pls fix by going to therapy

It’s all about perceived value!
Just do good work in the time you have and make sure you work with the right people. If you're consistent and reliable for senior people then you'll get recognition.
I had to get okay with being average in the best sense. I’ll do my job and I’ll do it well but I won’t be killing myself over deadlines. I think in big consulting firms they get all high performers together so out doing one another becomes almost cut throat. But listen at the end of the day, I’m making a good salary, trying to find a good fit within my firm or outside, and there are way more important things in my life I find fulfilling. I think it’d be cool to see more people with personalities outside of work.
OP - I know exactly what you mean. It’s hard if you are driven about work but also want a good wlb and have many interests outside of work. If organizations expect more than 45-50 hrs of work which is typical in consulting, it becomes progress career wise at the cost of other areas of your life or find balance but at slow progression with an avg career
