Do Plumbers generally charge a fee just to come look at the problem and provide an estimate? I called a couple of plumbers and they are asking for a 50$ or 75$ fee just to be at the door and give an estimate, the fee will be adjusted if I give them the job.

Yes. Keeps you from wasting their time by having them come out for a quote then using their quote as leverage with someone else.

Every trade does this

Yeah normal.

None of my contractors did this. Dallas.

Somehow I always end up paying more for free estimates…

Is this for a repair? Or a new project?

Not uncommon to charge a diagnostic fee that applies as a credit towards repair on something that is broken or needs urgent attention. In most cases, they can give you a general indication of what range a job might be based on common situations, but it’s not uncommon for jobs to spiral out of control due to unique circumstances.

Less common (but happens occasionally) when getting a quote for net new work.

Yes, generally like $50-75 but it’ll be credited to the repair if you go with them to fix it right away

Some larger companies in your area may do a free estimate, but I have found their prices are higher.
