Secondments depend from firm to firm and associate to associate. But if you are on track at a firm that actively supports secondments and the client is one that has a long-standing (and lucrative) relationship with the firm, the firm has a strong interest in associating its associates with the client to continue the relationship. A friend of mine did one with a client and it helped him become the natural transition for the business as he continued the relationship with the attorneys and decision makers of the client. On the other hand, some firms may see this as a distraction from what they hired you to do - especially if the client is not profitable or integral to the firm.
I’m on track, and it’s an important client, but I’m just not so sure that the firm actively supports it. It’s been pitched to me as a great opportunity, but one I shouldn’t take because I’m “too important” to let go for six months. Which is obviously BS because people go out for maternity and paternity leave for six months all the time and one associate does not a biglaw firm make.
That's crazy. 6 months is nothing. Working at the client gives you vast amount of usable knowledge for the rest of your law firm career. Your firm should support this as much as they can, especially if its a large client which you can tie to the firm (even) more.
