Do socially awkward interns still get offers? I am interning at a big 4 and am awkward af but get the work done well. I heard two of last year's interns didn't get offers so I am getting worried.

One intern didn't get an offer cause he decided he had done enough (?) to get the offer so he stopped doing work the last 3 weeks. God, the ego. Another intern didn't get it because everyone was 99% sure she was smoking weed in the bathroom. Also, building paper airplanes in the middle of busy season and snapchatting them being flown at busy coworkers. Like what.

like

You're clearly doing something right. You've gotten 2 internships, which means at least 2 different sets of interviewers thought you'd be a good fit. Be confident in yourself, your abilities, bring that offer home, and enjoy the rest of college

like

I would have hired the weed smoker

My intern is pretty awkward, socially. Small talk with him is difficult and likes to keep to himself. However, he's enthusiastic, works hard, and smiles often. I don't mind and I only have good things to say about him.

like

Could honestly care less about the awkwardness of interns if they can get the work done well. I don't think you realize, but all the interns are so fucking awkward in some way. Just something about them.

like

Interns who don't get offer, don't get offers bc they fucked up something serious. You'll be fine, just work on not being the most awkward person in earth. It's not that hard to communicate with people

like

Lol plenty of awkward accountants! Embrace it, it will not affect your offer

like

We're all a little awkward. EY1 you shouldn't go around saying that. How are the interns that don't get offers going to feel? You just told them if they don't get an offer they fucked up - pretty misleading since a lot of the firms are overstaffed right now. Not everyone gets offers and that's okay.

like

Probably would have if it weren't for the paper airplane thing.

Out of curiosity you are Interning at a big 4 but you have an RSM handle? Did you intern at RSM first?

like

^its hard for some people. OP, just try to relax and show you can be an asset to your team. You'll find other people not so comfortable too. Try to connect with whomever you can - no pressure

like

@pwc1, it's very rare that interns do not get offers. 99% of the time that an intern is not extended an offer it's because they did something really stupid. For example, the only inter out of my office last year to not get offer was due to him calling the manager a racist bc he got a bad review. I would also think, that if an office does not have capacity, they would offer the intern a position but out of a different office

like

If it's just being socially awkward in a non-offensive way but you do good work, we don't care. You'll get an offer from us. If you're awkward to the level that you're offensive, creep us out, and/or your work is subpar, you won't get an offer from our office. We have two interns right now that are probably not going to get offers. Both are awkward, but one is so creepy I refuse to be in a room alone with him. The other told a group of us during lunch that his pet peeve is fat people...not everyone on his team is skinny to include his senior. Not sure how he's going to work with people who are his admitted pet peeve. 🙄

like

If you realize you are awkward then you are at 1 step better than a lot of awkward ppl don't consider themselves awkward. I think you are more self conscious, otherwise you should have already noticed a lot of awkward ppl in the office.

like

Yes socially awkward interns get offers all the time. I would honestly prefer someone socially awkward who puts there head down and gets the work done. Don't care for the always social butterflies who waste time talking and socializing throughout the day (then I have to stay later and do their work). Would love to come to work, do the actual work and leave at a reasonable time at the expense of beong super social and wasting time during the day.

like

Yeah interned at RSM previously

like

It used to be pretty hard to not get an offer as an intern, but as open position have declined we've put more thought into it. That being said, we'd likely still take a good performer that's socially awkward.

like

I think we expect interns to be a little awkward. It's your first true "professional" experience usually. If technically you're good and not offensive personality wise (i.e. awkward doesn't mean you make racial jokes or hit on your fellow workers) then you'll be fine. Also, being conscious that you're awkward means you're probably not as awkward as some.

like

^amen to that. Would love to be able to go home one to two hours earlier by cutting out all the unnecessary activity

like

I'd say 50% of those are due to the intern lacking skills/not a good fit. 50% politics. I've never seen an intern fuck up their internship

Working as an audit staff in big 4 shared service centre. It's been 2 years. I really don't like what I do there, also it seems I won't like what I'll be doing there even after becoming senior. Thinking of leaving and joining industry once ACCA qualified. (One more paper left). But people around me discourage that growth potential and earnings in industry are way less compared to public accounting. I know that too but I still want to leave. I'd like to stick to core accounting. Thoughts pls

Have an offer on the table at a startup that’s $35K more than current big 4 salary for a Senior Manager role.
