Most companies have pay bands. You were brought in at a lower end of that band probably due to your lower years of experience. She was brought in at a higher end of that pay band probably due to having more years of experience.
One thing that is critical to remember when working in-house: almost every title was made up on an arbitrary basis to help fill out a organizational tree. They rarely correlate directly with job function, can mean totally different things at peer organizations, and certainly have no bearing on pay. In fact, it’s all too common to get a promotion in title only.
Assuming the same practice areas; the answers re comp bands (particularly given disparate YOE) would ring true.
My AGCs have different practice areas; so their salary bands also vary. Different practice areas vary widely in terms of market comp. A cyber/data atty in this market will cost much more than a commercial contracts attorney (as an example).
CLO, I’m both commercial and privacy/ data security for my company and your response makes me wish I got paid more 😂
Also, she may have negotiated her base salary.
Depends on the organization, but yes I think it could easily be due to total years of experience. When I went in house my total years of working experience (even non legal jobs) factored into pay and title.
YOE, practice area, when you joined the organization, how much leverage you had (and took advantage of) during comp negotiations, and whether you entered the role directly or through promotion will all impact where within our pay bands you end up.
My base is more than $30k higher than someone with the same job title in my department because I was hired directly into the role while my peer was promoted into their role, I had more experience overall, my practice area would be a little tougher to fill, and I was hired with the expectation that I’d be promoted to the next rung on the corporate ladder within a few years of hire (the last three of which gave me a fair amount of leverage in negotiations, and since I was having a great year at my firm, I used that leverage).
I was promoted up a level. The attorneys who came straight from a firm at my level make 30k more
Definitely bands depending on YOE and practice area. Two of us make about 40k more than our peers. Same title.
How do you all have experience in privacy/cyber law? I worked at V10 firms for 5 years in NYC and didn’t see anyone in either of these practice areas. How can I get this experience to make myself attractive for in-house litigation positions?
I started as a privacy legal intern at a tech company in law school. But you don’t need privacy experience for in-house litigation roles
