There's maybe a perception here that it matters but its pretty flexible. You're hired in to a specific office so if your entry level BA or ASC expectation is you live there and go into office to build your network. But once you've spent 1-2 years demonstrating you can be successful there's a lot of flexibility.
Its how a number of our newer offices get started - a group of people at all levels have been moving to a city without an office for various reasons and connecting then it hits critical mass. Denver, St Louis, Austin all had some element of this plus other factors.
From what I hear, there's ~20 people living in Portland aligned to Seattle office, Southern California has a number of people in Arizona, etc.
Deloitte doesn't, we're virtual first like forever and people staffed in NY routinely live elsewhere. Only matters when people assume your time zone in staffing. But note that D salaries are not tied to cost of living so doesn't matter if you live in Texas and are staffed from NY or Dallas.
D1 this is the official answer from my office leadership at the maybe 3rd biggest office in the US
Nope. You are assigned to a specific office and will get invites to that office’s events (though you can switch). As McK1 mentioned, it can also be helpful for networking and you might be more likely to get staffed on a project if you’re local. But generally it doesn’t matter, especially if you choose remote projects. My team at D has consultants from across the country.
At S& I think it depends. I can live where I want and my salary will be the same. They do prefer a large airport so I am in Miami. I got an offer from McK, EYP, ACN, LEK, and Deloitte and when I was going through the interviews this was my experience the last 6 months or so.
S&- let me live where I want.
McK - had to move where the group I was interviewing for was at. They gave me some choices, none that I wanted.
ACN - depends on the group. Non experiences hires more than likely need to be in a Hub city but depending on the group they don’t care. Experience hires have more leeway
EYP - transaction strategy was fine with anywhere. “Pure” strategy. W.e that means for them had to be a hub city.
Deloitte - didn’t care.
LEK - had to be a hub city.
Kearney does not care and does not localize salaries nor staffing
