Do these immigration rules (h1b changes to rules rumors) already started to have an effect on hiring practices for consulting such as MBBs? Does H1B sometimes replace Americans on many occasions?

^ I can relate. I paid almost 3 times what my American friends at school did towards tuition. I don't mind, it was worth the experience. However, not a lot of Americans acknowledge that it's international students that make college affordable for them. We subsidize costs for domestic students and fuel the American tech industry.

Where is this trump reform? I haven't seen anything and I spent half a million getting my education here.

The jobs that directly replace American jobs are the offshore/outsourcing ones. There are Indian and Asian outsourcing firms which exploit the H1b lottery by sending multiple applications for each employee. These employees are then hired by American firms at a much lower cost, which replaces American jobs. These employees either stay back in their home countries and work, or they are brought to the US as contractors. This takes jobs away from Americans and other internationals/resident aliens on valid visas. If you're a foreign national who's attended an American university and hired by an American firm, you are paid more, if not the same salary as an American. There is a fine line between the two kinds of H1B visa holders, and people often put everyone in the same bucket which is wrong. Trumps H1b visa reform would only benefit the thousands of students who've paid the huge tuition fee (almost double of what an American pays), studied here and got a job on a valid student/H1b visa. Gaming the H1b system by outsourcing companies has to stop !

Someone on a H1-B costs the company more money than a regular hire, so yes they would prefer local. However, the largest number of H1-B's go to outsourcing firms and companies that sign contracts with them don't bear the cost, just the fruit of the labor.

like

We don't inquire about nationality - and have explicit policies not to ask or consider it in our evaluations if anyone reveals it themselves. The H1B thing is an early draft being circulated in the House which would increase minimum salary for H1Bs to $130k/year. Too early to tell whether it will go anywhere - unlikely to be passed, can't be just executive order.

like

I suppose to soon to tell but i would generally say there will be no change in our hiring practices. End of the day, if Bain sees someone they want to hire, we will give them an offer because we want them in our system. Having been deeply involved in recruiting, sponsorship isn't considered when give an interview or an offer. Now, I have seen instances where an offeree is unable to get a visa to work in the US, so we'll work with them on a short term solution until we can get them here.

like

D1: Rofl, and your source is ? It's like saying that any American who didn't go to Brown or Cornell is a "reject", and had to eventually go to Duke because they weren't smart enough. I went to a reputed university in India which wasn't the IIT, and was hired by one of the big 4, before I came to the US to get a Masters degree. IITs take in close to 10K students in a year on an average. Do you know what the Indian population is ? Do you know how many of them are aspiring engineers/scientists ? Not everyone can go to IIT. The ignorance !

like

EY1 is right

like

B1-your company asks "do you need sponsorship now or in the future" which is the essence of "do you need a visa"

like

Ey1, few flaws with the argument - Indian outsourcing companies do not send multiple applications for the same employee, that has been explicitly prohibited since 2008. Very few of these H1b visas are actually used to outsource entire IT departments, they are usually used to support projects that are implemented in India- so while you may have a few Disney like incidents, most of the visas are used by the Indian firms to support the implementation of software projects from India. We can all vilify the crooked Indian companies, but the fact remains they provide a significant cost advantage and many projects wouldn't even be considered if they didn't involve a significant portion of the implementation being done from India

like

Guys again too much misinformation on this thread. @EY1, whatever proposals you are talking about are not part of "Trump's reforms". They are part of a bill proposed by a congresswoman who happens to be a democratic. Also, yes, the bill, if it becomes a law in its original form (which in itself is a long, complicated process) only affects the employers that are considered "H1B dependent".

like

EY1 your other misinformation is - it's not just Indian outsourcing firms. It's also Accenture, IBM, Cisco, Big 4 etc. that hire many internationals for similar <$100k roles. But, because they also have other larger practices with Americans, they are below the 50% H1B cap. Hence, their salary limit is still $60k. These companies will benefit by driving Indian outsourcing out of the market, and also get more H1B spots for their internationals. So, this is a very protectionist policy, and doesn't improve the situation as much. MBBs are a drop in the ocean, and already above the $130k cap, so insignificant in the scheme of things.

like

@OP I know that we definitely hire H1Bs instead of Americans for our CIG track. We will typically kick off a long term project with onshore people then replace them after 6-12 months with H1Bs

like

D1: I'm guessing you're an H1b from offshore as well, based on the condescending statements you made about international students here. Figures.

like

Last sentence update - is it truly merit based or companies need to favor Americans/permanent residents before H1B or OPT ?

^ These H1Bs are the offshore team employees, or the people who have been brought into the country by your firm on an H1b (who are paid lesser as compared to locals). Any foreign national who goes to school here is paid the same as you, if not more. So if they were to replace an American, it would be purely based on skills and not because they cost less. Like I said, blurred lines. People are confused about the whole process and what's actually happening.

@E1 they did not go to school here but we're brought here from offshore as lower cost resources. They are by no means more skilled than those they replace - in fact they are usually much worse which is why they cost less

Ey1 and z1, in the technology space, I have experienced the opposite at big4, the technology and analytical skills of resources brought here from offshore centers are significantly superior to those of American workers as well as h1b students hired from American universities, I think it is because the best and the brightest American students who want to work in technology go to firms like Google FB and others, whereas in India, deloitte and others gets to hire from IITs and similar colleges.

^ the last statement, um no.

Ey1, based on what, it is true, more so for Indian students graduating from US universities - a large number are usually rejects from elite Indian instutions, and usually are the ones who can afford an education in the US, none of that screams superior ability
