Would be a lot simpler if we had biological male, biological female, and one other third category as a catch-all. But I can see how that would be offensive to some.
To be clear, by biological, I mean that they are usually able to reproduce with another biological person of the opposite sex.
Very much true. I’ve always understood determining sex and gender as separate because sex is more specific to medical practices.
A lot of this causes so much confusion within our general society.
No I think people just need to have some empathy and educate themselves and we’d be just fine.
As I understand it, Hijra encompasses both sex and gender (eg, would include both intersex and transgender) and doesn’t really align with how we discuss gender.

They will never be accepted as long as the Church controls the (un)supreme court which could be for decades …
I do think we need some simpler language if we want the majority of the population to understand and accept (ignoring the bigoted minority for a moment). Same sex marriage was an easier sell when pitched as “just 2 people who love each other and want to be together”, leaving all the stuff about the Constitution/Leviticus/heteronormativity for the enthusiastic to debate. Maybe a 3rd category as an umbrella term is too simplistic but you could explain it to a grandparent and they leave the details to you. I certainly hope the third category is more than “other” which is what some administrations are bringing in. Could we say (don’t shoot me for this) “both”?
Is “third gender” more in reference to gender itself or sex?
I ask because gender = societal construct, while sex = biological, which includes intersexed individuals.
I'm trans and don't consider myself a third gender, I'm a woman.
