Do you all put your race and gender on job applications, or omit that info? In this day and age I don’t know if it hurts, helps, or doesn’t matter.

I'm literally over here hollering at D4's comment lol

Depends. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. If the company is mostly white and male in the area that I’m applying then I don’t. I know that most likely I’ll be screened out before the first interview when that is the case. But of course as I begin the interview process they will know what race I am, and I want them to so that I can get a good feel for their reaction. I want to avoid any hostile work environments.

I put it bc they’re going to find out anyway from my LinkedIn and my portfolio. 🤷🏾‍♀️ besides my name is Nigerian. I don’t be caring anymore.

like

I use to put white. I have a yt name so it all fits. I wish a recruiter or hiring manager would tell me straight up “I don’t look white”. That’s discrimination and an automatic hire 😃

funnylike

LOLOL I'm stealing this idea

I always put mine. If they don’t want me because of my race, then I don’t need to work for them anyway. However I do have a little bit going for me, because I have a “white” name on paper lol. Alluding to what UC designer 1 said, they’ll find out anyway 😂

likesmart

Nope. I put white or mixed and after I get hired, i might choose to update it depending on how I feel

funny

lol, coming from HR -- this is NOT information that is shared with hiring managers befor an interview. It's tracked for federal compliance reporting and literally illegal to share here/ in most other countries to capture. Nice to see folks are hopeful that diversity hiring will be taken on face value. Keep your social media up to date and people will find out your demographics just fine.

As someone who works with companies working to increase diversity. It depends. Companies who actually believe in building diversity it helps. Others not so much. Look to see what the company has done to try to help further diversity in there organizations. Gives you a good indication

I always put it. If it helps that’s cool. If it hurts that’s a blessing because I likely didn’t need to be employed there anyway.

I ALWAYS put it!

I put other Sometimes. But if you'll discriminate against me, I dont want to work with you

I haven’t actually applied for a job in years, but I would. They could tell from anyway - never met a white girl with my name in my life. 😂

likefunny

I ALWAYS do, because if they don’t want to hire a black man then don’t wait my time with an interview.

Sidenote, as a business owner I have found that it is NEVER wise to include your pic on your business website or to indicate that it is black owned. Unless your business specifically caters to black people. Otherwise folks will immediately assume your product/service is subpar.

I do because I have an uncommon name. A simple search on LinkedIn will tell them anyway.

I put mines and sis be really getting in them interviews but I also feels like my experience speaks for itself I also have a American name Ericka but not spelled the traditional American way

like

Yes

I don't bother. They'll figure it out soon enough. My name gives away a lot anyway.

funny

I do it every time.

I do. I have a black name and am easily found via google search. Everybody knows that I’m black before we ever speak.

I put it, if you would rather not hire me for my race then so be it! I couldn't care less really.

Does anyone understand why people list all three gender pronouns (e.g., she/her/hers) when one (she) would convey the intent? What am I missing?

I really don’t understand the hate against Diversity and Inclusion efforts. I grew up hearing my parents worry about being passed over for promotions and denied opportunities, due to race. It’s a real concern for black professionals.

We spout gender equality, but often ask women to do things men don't get asked to do. From organizing lunches/events at work (pre-Rona), to babysitting our siblings because we are girls with motherly insticts. It is generally expected that women do certain things that are "for the good of the community" which is just unpaid work for no praise. Let's change this. Let's start the change at home and it will translate elsewhere If you won't ask your son to do it, don't ask your daughter to do it.

To all my friends and colleagues supporting the D&I cause, I apologize for the rant but please know that this is important to me: We are Latinos, not Latinx. It’s not a description of gender, it’s a construct of “our” language to describe the plural in the masculine form. Spanish just be like that, as does French, Italian, and German (and others). Stop appropriating my language and adding your colonial English grammar rules to it. Please. Pretty please. With a great big cherry on top.

Quick poll: List your gender & a quick sentence on whether you like to work for male or female bosses (ok to say no preference). Me personally - Male - I’ve had better experiences working with male managers. I’ve noticed that more female managers feel disadvantaged and try extra hard to prove themselves (incredulous this happens in 2020), but in the process tend to be more demanding and stressful to work with. This is not intended to offend anyone. Just genuinely looking to learn and grow.
