Help from other teachers...sure...from admin??? Truly depends on the administrator, I've found that far too many times their 'help' just turns into MORE WORK for me!
I like the ārotating adminsā idea for another reason. Iāve seen far too many admins who have lost touch with the classroom experience that we live, day in and day out. I think thereās a huge benefit to admins to stay more in touch with the actual work of teaching (rather than test-driving the newest theories).
In my district, district-level admins have to to sub for a few days every school year. They started doing it about 4 years ago, and it is improving working relationships between teachers & admins.
Welp, I will be honest. I do my best to stay under the radar. In my district, itās best you do so. If I need help, I usually go to a teacher in trust and has experience.
Same here.
I stay under the radar as much as possible because I donāt always teach the way administrators probably want me to. I find that the directives coming from the state, and being dutifully implemented by our well meaning administrators, generally have very little to do with genuine education.
I want to stay under the radar but I've been under the microscope instead. I've been in a bad environment for teachers that don't check the boxes the right way.
Keep doing what you think is the best way to teach.
I ask for help. A few years ago two of my classes were loaded with students with IEPs, and they did not give me a Spec Ed. teacher. They gave me a para-educator. I went up the adm. chain, no help. Finally met with my principal. I had all my data lined up about my class composition and that two students were suppose to have one-on-ones. I did get some push back that as a master teacher I should be able to handle the classes. I explained no one could meet the IEP requirements. I presented several solutions. The compromise was I got a Spec Ed. teacher for the neediest class. I was not advocating for me, I was advocating for my students.
I really think that itās ok that we as teachers should be able to admit that we were advocating for ourselves!!! Anybody else in the Corporate world is totally expected to be going for as much as possible!! Why must teachers always have to Act like they have entered to the Convent to become a āLittle Sister of the Poor!!ā One of the reasons that I canāt wait to retire and begin a new career is that I am so weary of the whole schema/ethos of a guilt inducing profession where we must always be self-effacing and say that it is constantly about āthe childrenā. No! I am an adult professional. I have the right to be concerned about working conditions and my best interest. Every other profession: Accountant, Doctor, Lawyer, etc. is expected to think of themselves and their own interests first, and then of their customers/clients. Obviously, both are intertwined. As professionals they must be concerned about their clients because thatās how they will continue to have a good business practice, but you get my point. In Teaching and in Nursing, which are both considered traditionally female professions, the expectation is that you will always put your patient/Student first. If youāre not happy they wonāt be happy. We have learn to put ourselves first, reasonably, of course.
Under the radar but thatās mostly because my admin isnāt much help šš¤£š
It depends on what the situation is. I rarely go to my principal because I donāt want to look incompetent. Now that Iām within striking distance of Retirement, I donāt care as much what she thinks of me. As the year approaches I will care even less!! But I still need to keep my head above water for 3 more years. š¬ Freedom is a Beautiful thing!!! So precious!!! Cannot wait to get out!!
8m the Band Director - no one knows how to help me.
Hit the nail on the head!
How about having an administrator who loves what you do, but doesnāt know how you do it( or care). Then, the administrator decides they want to come visit your instrumental lesson class- which they have never done once in the 5 years they have been your Principal.
However, lessons are not up and running yet because you got directives from your Arts director at the beginning of the year to handle the set-up differently. You have even been working with the Principal - asking to come to building to get the instruments so you can service and inventory them! You give no indication that lesson have started- cause they havenāt.
Funny thing is the Principal was sent the directives, too, which they obviously did not read because.... they donāt care you and your band program.
Anyway, Principal is embarrassed when boss finds out about passiveness toward your band program.
Principal then takes you to HR to try and make you their scapegoat for their passiveness embarrassment.
But you have all the emails communications you need to say, ā Sorry, Principal, this is on you..ā
Unfortunately, colleagues familiar with this Principal warn me that this just start of what will become relentless persecution and that I should consider transferring to another building.

For the most part, I ask! š
I ask for help when I need it.
Ask
Under the radar for the good stuff I do, and ask for help when I need it. The humility learned (when I remember to apply this methodš) is helpful in ways that surpass the confines of the job.
I am loud and persistent. Passivity is all to common with teachers. If you are going to hold me accountable, give me what I ask for!!
All too common. Exactly
Pretty much depends on what its about. I prefer under the radar but will ask if I cannot avoid.

Ask for help! Find a more veteran teacher you can trust.
I teach music whats the struggle? I mean... besides teaching music online.....
Depending what it is!! I am a veteran teacher
When we ask, the ball gets dropped or it falls on deaf ears. The county/admin āare afraid yaāll will leaveā...the reality is they do NOT really care about the health nor safety of teachers . Administration has used the āDivide and Conquerā tactic with teachers in the past, but this year they want teachers to NOT Divide while Conquering the large majority of failing grades.
I always ask! Iād rather my colleagues think Iām dumb (they donāt) and be sure Iām doing the best job I can than try to fake my way through something and end up teaching something that isnāt correct. My students also love it when they come up with a question that I donāt know the answer to. My response that I donāt know but letās figure it out hopefully passes along my love for learning and that Iām just a human being, like them.
Unfortunately no. I've always figured things out on my own.
