Any suggestions for when there is no recruiter and you didn’t ask initially? The hiring manager reached out to me directly and I’m wondering if it’s too late to ask and I should just wait until the end of the process now.

Appreciate that advice!

Absolutely 100% ask. I can’t imagine going thru rounds of interviews not knowing what they’ll pay. That’s crazy. If they don’t bring it up, I ask “do you have an idea of what the compensation for this role is?” You can use that if you don’t want to say the word salary. I don’t go ahead with interviews without knowing.

I typically ask for the right ballpark - no need to go through it if it is too low

Same here. I’ll ask for a range or scale right from the the start. In my opinion, it saves us both time.

Get pay expectations out of the way during the first conversation with the recruiter. Avoids wasting anyone’s time.

likesmart

For sure. The recruiters usually ask for salary expectations anyway.. when I’ve asked for too much they let me know or give some insight on the bonus/stock incentives that might persuade me to join.

I don’t ask. I hate myself for it, though. I just fear that it’ll be seen as tacky which it totally shouldn’t be. I feel like the range should be given up front. I’m currently gearing up for round 4 of 6 for a job where I have no clue what the comp range is.

likesmart

Please absolutely ask for comp range in the first recruiter screening call - saves time for everyone. I did it throughout my FAANG recruiting process and they all shared the range in the first conversation. Saved me from wasting my time on a sales role at Google and allowed me to concentrate heavily on the interviews within my desired comp range

likehelpfulfunny

The recruiter should be doing this. If not, then yes, ask.

like

Very first question frankly, why waste your time with the process otherwise?

like

I ask when they initially engage me and prior to getting on an initial phone call, I won’t allow anyone to waste my time

likesmart

Most brand name consulting firm recruiters will share avg comp range for your level . If not , pls feel free to ask during your call with the recruiter.

haha Im getting tf out of consulting- but yes will ask from the get go then

Salary up front in initial talk or in next call rather than having to talk about salary question right before the last round of interviews.

How can we word it elegantly? Would love to know how I can be professional but upfront

I try to not be the first one to give a number. Ask what you can expect. Then you can always share your target later

To save wasting everyone's time I bring it up even before having the phone call with the recruiter (i.e. being pm-ed in LinkedIn).

Hi xxxxxxx, I'm currently happy where I am; it will take a lot to get me to consider alternatives (senior positions, higher TC, good career alignment). What can you share on the opportunity? ... and they dance around the TC talk. Hi xxxxxx, could you share the pay range for the position? ... by this time they provide you with range or you tell them yours. If they say that is not available or some other reason then Hi xxxxxx, OK, no problem, we'll have to stop here then. Thanks

I have found that recruiters usually bring it up to me on the first phone screen, but if they don’t definitely don’t be shy to ask at the end

Most good recruiters will ask the range up front so they don't waste your time and theirs with all the rounds of interviews just to find out you were way too far apart

I agree. Either they bring it during first screening call if not I will ask at the end. I am lazy person also money is only motivation behind changing job so if the role can’t pay what I am expecting then no need to go through the process and waste everyone time. I feel most of the recruiters liked this approach.

Since I graduated from UG every recruiter asks my comp expectations in the first screening call. Idk how y’all make it to an interview without knowing!!

First discussion or no discussion.. only company I can think of who pushed back was c3

I ask if not shared during the screening call with HR prior to the first round of interviews. The manager/whoever is doing the interview will likely not have insight on salary ranges. Hi

You ask in literally the first interview with the recruiter. Not for a hard number but for a range. If you wouldn’t be happy falling somewhere in that range tell the recruiter and don’t waste your time. You can also negotiate higher than that range by the time you make it to the end for an extra 5-10k
