Do you believe in astrology/horoscopes?

I'm curious what percentage of science & research people believe in this.

I like hearing when my non-science friends talk about my astrological sign. I don’t take it seriously but I do enjoy it when they tell me this month is lucky for whatever reason 😂

like

Haha that’s nice! I have plenty of those kinds of friends as well and they provide me updates whether I want them or not about my sign and things to come

I am not a huge horoscope astrology person but I will say that every time I read them, they are strangely accurate. My older sister is really into that kind of stuff so she will send them to me from time to time and I always find them to be spot on lol.

like

lol that’s funny! I think on a good read, you should try and play the lottery. You just never know!

"Believing" in astrology is an interesting thing. Do I base my life decisions on things I read about my astrological sign? No. Would I ever decide who to date based on astrological compatibility? No. But do i have the "pattern" app and enjoy reading the "insight" on what's going on in my chart, haha yeah I don't see why not? As long as I'm not taking it too seriously I don't see the harm

like

That’s great! I know someone that loves to read astrological signs and plans her weekly routine around them lol

There are multiple scientific studies debunking the validity of astrology. Columbia University, Scientific American, and IFLScience each have solid articles.

If anyone I work with, or know otherwise, is a steady believer in astrology, despite being presented with logic and and scientific proof that contradict it, it then is evident that person cannot be relied upon to be objective or adjust their position/approach when given new information. Which is a critical attribute in STEM.

Well said AD1. I feel the same way! I try not to offend anyone if that’s what they believe in but certainly don’t believe in it either

Soooo I've done genetics, developmental biology, stem cell research. I don't believe in it BUT.. Do you know about epigenetics? I believe the mother's experience throughout pregnancy and the baby's first months are really impactful on a baby epigenome. Specifically, the environmental factors associated with seasons, time of conception, time of birth and first month of life are very important to a new life. That's my opinion

God no lol. I have a large percentage of my friend base (these people are not in the science community) who believe in astrology. I just politely smile and nod when they discuss it. I figure there is no need to debate people on the completely harmless things that bring joy to their lives.

like

Yes it does bring joy to people to feel like they’re destined for something that is written in the stars! It’s a nice feeling to have however irrational that may be

Nah I don’t

like

Fair enough!

I think its fun but I don't take it too seriously. Its entertaining but I don't believe in reshaping my own experience/traits to bias it towards astrology

like

That seems fair! I don’t think most people in science would gravitate towards astrology but there are a good majority in the scientific discipline who still believe in it. Guess it’s a nice way to hedge your bets

No, astrology never made sense to me. I am fascinated by some things which don't exactly align with science, especially some things in Irish folklore. But even some of that stuff has a scientific explanation, there are theories that holy wells did have minerals with medicinal properties, that sort of thing.

like

Yeah there are too many things science can’t even explain! I’m sure there maybe reasons for them that are perfectly logical but just unknown to us at this time

like

Astrology is not a believe, it is an ancient exoteric knowledge

like

It’s not a belief you say? When you say ancient do you mean from like the Sumerian times?

No. Not even a little.

Nope. I think it’s entertaining to look it up occasionally but I definitely don’t believe any of it

Including Sumerian, of course, before and after.

About to head to the HC for a role in ProdOps and Strategy in Mountain View. 4 YoE at MBB, no competing offers. Recruiter gave me a form that asks expected comp.

What total comp would you expect for this role? Any advice would be super helpful, as I’m a bit lost.

Hi there! My boss has recently hired more people and she is not managing our new size well. She clearly cannot handle bigger teams and translates her panic into overly-controlling and suffocating structures. Team members have no voice and if they do, it’s something really minor. She talks a lot about a shared vision, reading Dare to Lead together, etc, but it comes off as shallow. How do I call her out in the most supportive way possible? I want to help and this situation is giving me anxiety.
