Unlimited PTO is a financial liability dodge. It doesn’t mean you get as much time off as you want. It means if you get fired or quit they don’t have to pay you out for earned vacation time.

Unlimited PTO is never truly unlimited. Agencies adopt it for their own benefit, not employees. Not only do studies prove that people take less time off when it’s “unlimited” for fear of looking lazy to their supervisors, but agencies don’t have to pay employees any unused vacation days when they lay them off. That’s why they institute it.

Big facts, my former agency implemented unlimited PTO right after they laid me off in 2020. I was thankfully reimbursed for my unused vacation days, but these companies are just not trying to pay people - especially the juniors!

More money, chill shop. Unlimited PTO doesn’t matter if you’re overworked and can’t even get the time off approved.

That's the thing. If you're overworked I can't see how you're using unlimited PTO.

Literally who would choose option 2. Unlimited PTO means nothing if you’re so burnt out that 1) you probably are burning too hard to even take a vacation and 2) taking a vacation isn’t even relaxing because you’re so busy/will get burnt the second you return. Also you’ll have no money for vacations since you make less.

From someone who is so burnt out and has decent vacation time, literally nothing gets done if I’m OOO so what’s the point? I’ve been called while at funerals too, no respect for time off.

If you’re in the LA area, most places that are very (or completely) dependent on a car brand. Interned at one and have heard the same for others. These still have long days, some nights, but more around 9-6ish, for the most part. But, I think some pay quite a bit less.

What? More money and chill shop. Not even a question. I’m not even sure what the negative of the first one would be? Less interesting work? Who cares! Give me more money and WLB any day!

Haha by chill shop I mean a shop that has good work life balance compared to where I am now 😭 I’ve barely had a summer…

Unlimited pto is literally a way for companies to not pay you out when you quit. You never end up taking more days off than the amount allocated in the first scenario

I take days off all day bruh.

unlimited PTO isn’t real

Does unlimited PTO really mean anything when you feel like you can’t use it because you’ll be so stressed out and behind? I’d go for the better balance - if you’re burning out, it means your agency either isn’t good at identifying gaps and needs for additional resources, can’t retain employees, is financially strapped, or has a hard time recruiting (either because of skill, lack of valuable benefits, poor pay, etc.). I left an under-resourced agency that offered me more money to stay and had unlimited PTO, for a bit less pay but appropriate work loads and adequate resources, and I’m taking more time off now than when I had the unlimited PTO previously. And I’ve gotten so much of my energy and life back now that I’m no longer burnt out.

More money at a chill shop. Unlimited PTO is overrated anyway and you’re unlikely to take as much time as you really want if the culture is causing burnout
