Do you choose multiple mutual funds your 401K is invested into? Or do you stick to the target year blended fund?

I just put all of mine in a large stock index. S&P 500 or Total stock market. I’m young and don’t want anything in bonds so I avoid the target date funds.

What I do too. Easier to manage and I am financially literate so will change it up in the future

Check expense ratios as well. Sometimes the target date fund has a high expense ratio, cutting into your money and gains. And you could quickly replicate the spilt between other funds, which could be of a combined lower expense ratio.

Excellent point. As another EY person, the target dates in our plan are low cost vanguard funds.

For the last 5 years I’ve just stuck to blended target year fund since I felt that was safest. However, I just decided to break it out into 80% target year, 10% growth fund, 10% blue chip funds going forward. I’m in my late 20s

If you want to add some of the recent high flier options, the fidelity growth company trusts has a much lower ex ratio than the retail fund (.3 vs.8). Just remember there is no guarantee that it will continue to outperform.

I put all to the best fund they offer for 401k which is Dodge and Cox. And put in max to where I get the company match. Then with where I have unlimited options, in my own IRAs I mix it up with funds specifically geared in each area: US total market, extended market, international, biotech and health, innovation and tech. Rebalancing now and then and look for funds with very low to no fees. I like to be involved and engaged rather than be the forget about it type. Not because I’ve done any better, it is just something I enjoy.

Just a note the fidelity zero funds including FZROX are only available at fidelity

If you don’t want to spend time figuring everything out, the target date funds are the way to go. You can always change later if you want

I believe the patent relies on having an etf as a share class of the mutual fund. I will be curious to see if someone like fidelity creates a lot of etfs for this purpose

The target date funds for my 401(k) invest in the same Vanguard Index Funds you can elect yourself, but at 3x the cost in fees. Check out the prospectus of the target date and do your allocation according to how it's laid out in the prospectus. You may not get ALL of the same options, but I'd wager you have the big ones available. Just food for thought.

This is very true, esp on the behavioral aspect. Have to keep the long-term horizon in mind. I work with investments and keep track of various trends. I don't generally mess with allocations unless I'm anticipating MASSIVE market swings. When stocks were rising in 2019 I was getting very antsy about a major fall, so I started cycling out of the index funds and into bonds as insurance to protect my large YoY gains and be poised to jump back in. When the major fall came about in Q1 2020, I loaded back into the index funds. Ended both years in very nice positions. But again, that's part of what I do, albeit, I'm definitely not a trader by any stretch. I wouldn't recommend to the average investor. Target funds are being forced to lower prices with each passing year, so target isn't nearly as expensive as it used to be.

100% in S&P

Very good plan. Some want international also but 100 percent 500 is a better plan than most

Received MBB offer, which I’m very grateful for. I have a medical degree with some work experience. I want to stay in healthcare. What sort of exit opps would be available to someone like me post MBB? Would my skill set/knowledge base be uniquely sought after, or not really? Thank you for your help!
