I consider the 401K comp, but not the vacation days... but I would absolutely take 6-7K less in total comp for two more weeks of vacation time each year
Pro
Absolutely consider lucrative 401k matches in TC. It’s literally free money
Yes, assuming OP participated in 401k, then the matching should be counted as part of total comp.
Pro
Honestly, A pays you like 5k more (considering 401k if vested immediately) but you get 2 weeks less vacation. I personally would choose B over it as I wouldnt put a strict monetary value on it. But - A pays you 3.2k per week so 10 days extra gets you right at par - but your quality of life will be much better with 25 days off
Because offers are that close, I would take company B with 10 more days of PTO and higher 401k match.
Those 10 days at 160k are worth 2 week salary or $6k.
If cash is significantly higher, I would take that but 15 days of PTO is low.
Pro
Financially, pre tax the offers are identical if you value 10 days at 6k and the extra 3% 401k (4K) just depends if you want your $ now or later and how you wanna do taxes on it
Chief
Cash is king
Pro
I would classify the 401k as comp since it’s measurable (beware of any bs vesting schedules that may or may not get you). PTO there’s technically a monetary value, but if you’re not gonna use it, much of it will end up written off
Yes, but only count the amount vested each year.
Total rewards vs s total comp
Company B base is 160k
I count 401k match but not PTO. I usually take 10-15 days a year off so as long as I have 15 days, I don't value a different offer as higher for more PTO
nah I would not
I like company B for the 10 extra days of PTO. Can you go back to company B, however, and ask for a higher salary?
401k definitely should be considered as part of TC (or potential TC). PTO I wouldn’t consider as part of comp, but more of a perk.
That being said, I value PTO a lot and the second option with more PTO would be a no brainer for me.
I didn’t even think about that because I always use all mine😄 good point though, I guess it is considered comp then for most people
I’d take money out of it since they are so close. What job would you enjoy more ?!
Yeah especially after tax…
the second, considering you should be putting 20% into your 401k if you want to retire before 60 (assuming you are early 30s based on the salary)
What about the vesting period of each?
