Do you contribute to a 401k? If so, why?

Yes because I’m in my mid 20’s and what I put into my Roth 401k now will have 40 years of interest to accrue. I personally choose to max out my Roth 401k to the annual limit of 19k and put another 6k into my Roth IRA. Some people may find this crazy because I don’t have liquidity to buy a home using my retirement funds. Which is a fair point, but I’m frugal with my money and have enough savings for a down payment now if I wanted to. I just prefer to rent an apartment now due to the ongoing economic conditions.

like

Key is living in an apartment below market to make the math work. Yes, if I lived in the level of quality I would buy (newer, 2bd/2ba) it wouldn’t work, but I live in an old 1bd and invest the difference.

Max out your contributions every year. I’ve weathered 2 market crashes and am still way ahead. It’s worth noting that not all 401ks are created equal as some companies available funds aren’t all that great.

Cuz its the adulting thing to do..

I contribute up to the 6 percent match to my Roth 401K = free money and it grows tax free. I invest all the extra money I save elsewhere

Used to, but stopped. I am on H1-B and not sure on the outlook of visa situations. I won't be able to take money out of it without penalty if needed.

like

The only exception is if you are in some authoritative or mismanaged country but this is US

That’s sensible. But keep the contributions to 6% so that you get full employer match. Even after tax you will get substantial return.

like

Yes. Because I want to take advantage of the tax benefits

Only 4% right now because I'm saving for a house. I usually max it out.

Max out 401k, max out after tax 401k, backdoor IRA, HSA, ESPP

Here ya go: https://lmgtfy.app/?q=espp

Only enough to get the company match and since I’m no longer Big 4 I can buy whatever stock I want now muahahahaha!!!!

Typically enough for the company match but thats about it. I fund an IUL policy(s) and leverage for a personal bank and will use as another retirement vehicle. Hedges the increase in taxes at retirement age.

I max out by mid Oct so I can get a few larger checks at end of year

How else would you save for retirement

You must not work in finance

Yes. Only 8%. 6 % for the lame match and 2% to feel better about myself

20%. Another 20% in BTC.

I bought some trickle of btc when it was in the 100's and now I hate myself...
If I did not have family considerations and back firing i would have been mining them since 2011 given the nerd that I am....

Max out the match!

Max out every year, both of us. There are no more real deduction for taxes for most of us (non-partners) since they capped SALT and Mortgage Interest.

Cap it every year.

Yes. Max out 401k, HSA, two back door IRAs.

401k question:
It seems generally advantageous to lump sum your Roth IRA each year as early as possible vs DCA since it can accumulate returns at a higher rate over time. That being said, does this apply to 401k as well? For ex: is there any downside in just front loading my 401k contribution completely each year if I can cover living expenses in the meantime? (i.e putting 100% of paycheck into 401k contribution until limit) thanks!

My boss and the junior editor have an affair and it's making work miserable for some of us. Favoritism towards her is ridiculous, access to info's and processes is impossible. She's being overempowered on too many tasks and unfortunately, she's not as talented as she thinks, so performances are generally not great. It's the kind of situation where everyone feels disempowered and literally no one knows what to do, except resign.
