I've always been asked why I found a "proper" job at my 30s and wasted my years in unrelated jobs like call centers and inhouse calls for installing Windows.

I can't seem to make them understand that in 2008, it was impossible to find an IT job in Greece as a woman. I had certifications and knowledge but I couldn't even get a callback. I would send the same CV as a man, and they would call immediately.

Now things are different but still this question comes up and I'm struggling to answer it.

Honest question: why do consulting/advisory firms focused on national security and defense offer lower salaries than a GS position that requires less experience? For example, interviewed for a role that wanted 8+ years of experience and then offered less than a GS-12. How do they expect to get folks with govt exp if they don’t even pay more?
