Do you ever have parents sitting with their child on one of your zoom classes? Anything weird or awkward ever happen?

I work with SPED k-5 students. I have 4 in the classroom and up to 5 online. Several parents are the the kids to ensure their focus remains on the task at hand. One day recently, a parent fell asleep and snored during our live session. She woke up and was so embarrassed. It actually was the highlight of our day. The students didn't realize what had happened but the other parents and I knew. All I could say was bless her heart

I have parents or siblings sitting with my kids during class sessions (I only ask that they help the kids log in). The weirdest one was when a parent would log in and sit through the class everyday. I never actually saw my student! I started making 2 homework packets. One for him and one for the parent. I finally got him to come back in person. I have also had parents ask questions that should not have been asked during class time. The one I love the most is when they tell you that their child hasn’t learned anything, but their child doesn’t do homework and take their tests. And during class sessions the kid has headphones in listening to music or watching movies on YouTube with the phone the parent gave them. I will not miss distance learning.

I have also had a Grandma who got fairly into the content and was answering questions

I love it! Have you ever played a video by math by 5? I had a parent listening who loved it--it opened dialogue between parent and child about the topic. Fill the room.

like

Yes. I had a parent eat a crayon during our holiday party.

WHAT?

I just cannot "unsee" the bare-chested, beer-belly dad walking in the background. I had a hard time keeping a straight face.

likefunnysmart

That’s happened to me before! I’m like seriously?!! 😂

funny

Heard parents having a knock down argument in the background. Kid was unphased and didn't mute so I did.

All the time.. they whisper the answers

likefunny

Yep! Seen more of physical presence than is appropriate for first graders. People need to keep themselves dressed properly when cameras are on, that's all I'm saying. We also had to have a conversation about CCW. That was a fun day! 🤦‍♀️

Oh lord!

How bout just a dad? No kid? Lol

funnylike

Sometimes there’s nothing on Netflix 🤷‍♂️

I get half naked grown men and lots of cursing

likefunny

Yea, a parent responded my child went to the bathroom he’ll be right back! 🤣

funnylike

Didn’t happen to me, but a colleague had a dad walk past in a towel and wet like he just got out do the shower.

funnylike

Isn’t this fun 😁

Parent cussing and saying she needed to call the school about a teacher 🤨

An adult in t-shirt and panties pull shirt partially up and adjust panties, listen to someone peeing, older siblings friends come into the room and not realize (?) that he was doing school and proceed to have a very descriptive conversation about a young lady that they admired using nonstandard English

Hilarious and interesting commentary from everyone!

Had a completely nude mom bring her daughter a plate of breakfast during class. She was fully visible from head to knees. When she realized that she was on camera, she froze for a couple of seconds, then ducked for cover. Who feeds their kid or makes breakfast completely nude ?!?! This is a true story.

funnylike

I have to wonder the legality of this. I am sure some parents could push the issue if they wanted.

Hi. I had a student’s mom say a bad word in the background. I didn’t hear it. But it must have been bad because the student said “language mom!”.

My sister was feeling awful in the fall because her youngest was messing with the dog cage and pinched the dog in the door. Sis let an f-bomb drop while one of her other kids was in zoom I assuueed her it probably wasn't the firstly time and it wouldn't be the last

Lots of coffee making in the background and giggling small siblings

Playing devils advocate here: Pre pandemic many teachers wanted more parent involvement. Now it’s too much? I’m thankful that the child is getting any support at either times (3rd grade male Latino teacher here).

like

I don’t think half naked men walking around in the background and hearing cuss words over zoom is the parent involvement we were looking for though 😆

If we have good, free healthcare through spouse’s job (military), is it still worth it to pay for a high deductible plan through my job to get the benefit of an HSA? For context, we are a family of three. The cost of the health care plan just for myself would be $20/paycheck every two weeks (or about $520/year). Cost to add husband or child to the plan is over $200/paycheck (so I know that’s not an option). My thought is it’s not worth it to pay for the plan, but is there another pt of view?

How do you create a setup where you’re not “looking away” from the camera on calls when you use your second monitor primarily for everything? I’ve gotten feedback saying it looks like I’m not paying attention when conversing on zoom.

My MIL has made remarks to my husband that she doesn’t understand why we need a nanny for our infant since I am able to WFH (I’m a biglaw associate). She also doesn’t get why we have a cleaner and dog walker and seems to imply we’re wasting our money by outsourcing funds on things we can do. She was a SAHM so I guess I understand why she feels that way, but how do I explain to her why these things are necessary? I actually love my MIL but this is driving me nuts.

Hello, I am 36 and have over 250k in savings. I started saving late (at 32) as I didn’t make much and lived in NYC. I used to be on a visa and had little to say on my salary negotiations. Upon getting my green card, my salary doubled when I changed jobs and I started saving extensively. Today I make around 180k a year and am able to save $4.5k a month and 7% towards 401k. I have no kids and I am looking to maximize savings. Any advice? Thanks!

The ebbs and flows of a junior associate (<1yr)... I was approached by my managing parter today about my billable hours. I make an honest effort to bill 40 hours a week and average 37-40 hrs. I learned today that many of these hours are written off by partners and my realized hours are only 30-ish. Now I'm expecting to bill at least 50 hours a week to make up for that deficit. I don't understand why so much time is not realized. Has anyone else had this problem?
