Do you feel like tech giants, or companies in general, have a resonsiblity to contribute to society in a positive way? And what might that be?

I think they already do. We’re just jaded and entitled.

Growing up, internet was barely a thing. There was no access to knowledge at the scale we have today. Online shopping? Sharing photos? Good luck.

Apple, Amazon, Google, even Facebook have added ton of value to our society. It’s just that people rebaseline their expectations near constantly and ignore the value.

Private businesses? Nah. Would it be nice. Yes. But no. I think they should do what they want and people can decide to support or not support

Contribute to society– yes. I think this can be achieved by donations and offering VTO (volunteer time off) to employees, amongst other things. I think some companies contribute to society in a positive way through their product offering.

Taking political stances– no. Companies should stay out of politics. The lines are gray and I feel like it doesn’t come from a genuine place. Just another way to obtain consumer trust, that makes me not trust them.

I feel people in general should feel a sense of responsibility to help make positive changes. A business or large company is made up of people, so to answer your question, yes. At a minimum companies should be questioning what harm or negative impact to society and the environment they are causing and make changes to prevent that.

What are the tldr differences between HR roles, people Operations, and people business partner positions? They all seem similar but I’m curious how y’all characterize them. I’m coming out of a very internal position at a nonprofit and I’m trying to better align my work accomplishments to make sense in more traditional career paths.

It seems like everyone is in agreement that switching firms gives you a salary boost, but that you could be viewed as someone that doesn’t stick around. Has anyone felt like they got held back from jumping firms every 2-3 years for the salary bump? I know peers that bounced around 2-4 times in a 7 year span and they are making significantly more money than if they stayed at their first job, however it didn’t seem like any of the new companies cared that they bounced around. Other experiences?

I studied computer science in school but I didn’t do well due to life coming in the way. I got poor grades but ultimately finished my degree without any internship experience.

After three months of job search, I started for 45K at a construction company as a Jr App Support. After a year I shifted in to QA for 65k and now after a year of QA, I have finally gotten a position as a software engineer for 78K base.

The imposter syndrome is finally gone!
