I think they already do. We’re just jaded and entitled.
Growing up, internet was barely a thing. There was no access to knowledge at the scale we have today. Online shopping? Sharing photos? Good luck.
Apple, Amazon, Google, even Facebook have added ton of value to our society. It’s just that people rebaseline their expectations near constantly and ignore the value.
Private businesses? Nah. Would it be nice. Yes. But no. I think they should do what they want and people can decide to support or not support
Contribute to society– yes. I think this can be achieved by donations and offering VTO (volunteer time off) to employees, amongst other things. I think some companies contribute to society in a positive way through their product offering.
Taking political stances– no. Companies should stay out of politics. The lines are gray and I feel like it doesn’t come from a genuine place. Just another way to obtain consumer trust, that makes me not trust them.
Paying taxes would be a good start
I feel people in general should feel a sense of responsibility to help make positive changes. A business or large company is made up of people, so to answer your question, yes. At a minimum companies should be questioning what harm or negative impact to society and the environment they are causing and make changes to prevent that.
