Do you feel like your firm hired sub-par attorneys during the ‘21 hiring boom?

Every firm hires some sub-par attorneys at all times. From what I’ve observed and been told, the group hired during Covid definitely learned less in their first couple years.

like

Yes. My firm even said something to the tune of “we’re raising standards from Covid hiring practices” to those of us who interviewed people this 2023 summer. lol

like

My in-house department recently raised its standards for new hires, stating we needed people “who can write well.” Like, what are you trying to say? Lol!

like

Yep - not just attorneys, either. But luckily they are weeding themselves out, too.

I think this depends on so many things. Were they fresh out of school hires? So many of them were thrown in, in a remote work environment without decent training.

Someone made a point about mentorship and it’s so true. Being at a few different firms and seeing how some were mentored and then looking at my firm, it just wasn’t as good. Leadership blamed the associate, and I saw that it wasn’t necessarily some of the associates fault. I will say the work ethic wasn’t the same as my generation (12 YOE). People wanted $$$$ to work few hours (also think it’s the reason so many people went in-house). I am not saying that people shouldn’t have lives, but associates need to put the time in to learn (and to reaps better hours and money down the road).

I guess to get back to your original point, salaries were high, bodies were needed and many of the young associates just didn’t have the experience they should. But there were hires that great and have stuck around. I think these were generally those that had a few years of experience prior to 2021.

Almost exclusively, and sub-par would be a nice way to put it.

How do you ask about WLB in an in-house interview (or do you wait until post-offer) in a way that doesn’t make you look like a slacker? I’m all for working hard (albeit not at a partner’s whim every random night or weekend), but I’m nervous about taking a paycut only to find myself in a role where I work late every night and people don’t take vacations. Maybe I have law firm PTSD but don’t want to make a bad move!

My husband has some sort of sweat problem. Last night, he made the bed soaking wet (and he likes to cuddle me while we sleep so I woke up at 1 am with about 30 cms of dry bed left, he had soiled the rest to the point that I had to get a towel and even then it was damp). Any advice? I don’t want to hurt his feelings but it’s been going on for years and I just can’t stand it anymore

Recruiters call me about my CV but don’t ever really get back to me with roles. One rang me about my CV regarding a role I was interested in. On the phone they said they’d email me if they were going to put me forward and never did so I submitted my application directly and got asked for an interview. Why are they calling me and then not putting me forward? Am I doing something wrong? (I am an NQ so no experience with recruiters)

PSA to all associates: having been around the block, I hate to see the notion being sold that recruiters have information about positions that are not listed. When it comes to lateral associate recruiting between big law firms, the vast majority of firms post all their positions online. It makes simple economic sense because then they get more associates applying. The whole notion that recruiters even have deep connections to law firms is also usually garbage for associate recruiting. Continued.

What is the best way for a US-licensed attorney to lateral to a position in a big legal market in a different country, e.g. London?

Is being a legal recruiter very cut throat? Obviously you're competing with recruiters from other recruiting firms, but given it's a commission based model, I would think there's some level of cut throatness even within the same recruiting firm. The fact that it seems like the recruiter market is pretty saturated, as well, probably doesn't help? Any insights/experiences would be appreciated, thanks!

I am looking for a new job at the end of a long career. I have excellent experience in IP and Supply Chain Management. I've been fortunate to be in a high-paying position in the Los Angeles area and I rarely see comparable positions posted. Any recommendations for finding the rare executive-level legal positions or for landing on the radar of the big executive search firms would be much appreciated!

I currently work as a personal injury lawyer at a small law firm, 5 years experience, graduated from T30 law school in 2015. Our subject area is pretty niche, and I am looking to branch out. Not big law, but a different subject area, and hopefully something with a better work life balance (have a small child with hopes for more). Open to leaving the law for a compliance/HR/other type position. Am I even marketable for something like that? Am I being unrealistic?
